The body is long fusiform. The eyes are flattened at intervals. No grooves in front of eyes. Top of head without scales, mandibles protruding from maxillae; ends of maxillae extending below middle of eyes; maxillae scaly. Body covered with medium to large pectinate scales, bare and scale-free on dorsal and anal fins; lateral line complete and straight. Soft dorsal and anal fin bases not scaled; and with deep indentations between soft dorsal fins, 10 dorsal spines and 11 soft spines; 3 anal fin spines and 8 soft spines; pectoral fins about equal to head length; caudal fin y forked. The body is uniformly bright red, with a lighter colored abdomen. Body length up to 70 centimeters.
