The Chinese medicine cypress comes from two plants, the deciduous trees Phellodendronchinense Schneid and P amurense Rupr. in the family Rutaceae (see Figure 2-108). The bark is used as a medicine. The bark contains berberine, palmatine, magnoflorine, cypressine, medicinal root alkaloids, cypress ketone, cypress lactone, and moss lactone. The leaves contain berberine and the fruits contain rosmarinic acid. Bitter flavor, cold nature. It has the function of clearing heat and detoxification, diarrhea and dampness, as well as antibacterial, lowering blood pressure, hypoglycemia and coronary artery expansion. The main treatment of acute bacterial dysentery, acute enteritis, acute jaundice hepatitis, mouth sores, rheumatoid arthritis, urinary tract infections, spermatorrhea, leucorrhea; external treatment of burns, acute conjunctivitis, canker sores. Chuan Huangbai is produced in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Hubei, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan and other provinces and autonomous regions; Guan Huangbai is produced in Liaoning, Jilin, Hebei and other provinces.

The adaptability of the yellow cypress is strong, of which Guan Huangbai is more cold hardy, to the boundary of Shanxi Luliang Mountain, north for the growth of Guan Huangbai, south for the growth of Sichuan yellow cypress. Huangbai seedlings can tolerate shade, avoid high temperature and drought, adult trees like sunshine. Prefer to grow in deep, humus-rich soil. Prefer humidity, but afraid of waterlogging.

Seeds need low-temperature moisture to break dormancy, sand storage at 18-22 ℃ for 20-30 days below, transferred to 3-5 ℃ for 30-60 days, when the seed cracking rate of 30% can be sown.
