Behind the scenes

Underwater filming

The film began shooting on April 4, 2000 on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The U.S. Navy allowed the crew to shoot underwater at the Arizona Memorial, which had never been open to film crews before. The wreckage was located 40 feet underwater, and the fuel oil from the spill was still present, so the water was not cloudy, and the amount of silt, algae, and giant barnacles made it very dangerous to shoot the underwater scenes.

Explosion Scenes

To create the most spectacular and thrilling air raid scenes, special effects coordinator John Fraser decided to detonate the six battleships with 700 sticks of dynamite, 2,000 feet of detonating cord, and 4,000 gallons of gasoline. For safety reasons, Fraser had thousands of fire hoses and fire extinguishers on set in case the fire got out of control, and all crew members were required to wear gas masks. Director Michael Bay carefully placed 12 widescreen cameras, one of which he personally shot, a scene by 30 stuntmen, 90 extras, 9 airplanes, a camera ship and countless special effects technicians *** with the construction of the scene, in 7 seconds in one fell swoop, at the same time, all the plans were surprisingly without fail, and for this scene the crew prepared for 7 months.

Computerized

Although many of the battle scenes in the film are from real special effects, the details need to be done by Industrial Light & Magic. Pearl Harbor is a tourist destination, and the visual effects crew had to remove everything but the distant mountains from the scene before adding computer-generated battleships, attacks, and big explosions. Miniatures and large sets were minimized, and computer models of ships and airplanes were created and later replicated, resulting in hundreds of CG airplanes and more than 10 CG ships appearing in the film. In addition to filling the entire Pearl Harbor, computer-generated sailors with different costumes and movements on the ships were also used.

Aerial Filming

The film's Pearl Harbor was an air raid, so the crew's aerial department dominated, and the crew had 14 planes in the air at the same time, some of which were old enough to have been in use for 60 years, and the filming of the movie would have undoubtedly pushed them to their limits, and it's a good thing that the pilots the crew invited to the filming were experienced. When filming the tower scene, the plane had to approach the 16-story tower at 200 miles per hour, and then turn around and fly around the tower, which was only 10 feet away from the plane, and the pilots ensured the safety of the whole filming with their excellent skills.
