Shanmei Reservoir is located in the middle of the west coast of Taiwan Strait, in Nan 'an City, the middle reaches of Dongxia, a tributary of Jinjiang, Fujian Province. It is the largest reservoir under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Water Resources Department and a large-scale water conservancy project integrating flood control, water supply, irrigation and power generation in Quanzhou market.
The reservoir was built in 1958, during which it was demolished twice. At the beginning of 1967, the Ministry of Water and Electricity approved the resumption of work, which was completed and put into production in June 1972.
