Chen Zhiqiang is a native of Tianjin and was born in Shenyang. He graduated from the School of Philosophy of Aristotle University in Greece in 1994 with a doctorate in history and archaeology. He is currently a professor at Nankai University, dean of the School of History, director of the Department of World History, deputy director of the Center for European Studies at Nankai University, and director of the Byzantine Research Center in Eastern Europe. 1995, was elected as the director and vice chairman of the China World Medieval History Research Association. He is currently a member of the State Council Discipline Appraisal Group (History) and the chairman of Tianjin Historical Society. He has been engaged in cooperative research and lectures at Harvard University, Princeton University, Athens University, Helsinki University and Duisburg-Essen University. His research fields mainly involve Byzantine history and culture, world medieval history, European history and Christian history. He has published nearly 100 papers in China Social Sciences, Historical Studies, World History and Archaeological Journal. Representative works include Byzantine Studies (People's Publishing House, 2002 edition), History of Byzantine Empire (Commercial Press, 2003 edition) and Ancient Balkan History (Zhonghua Book Company, 2007 edition). Tianjin won the first and second prizes for outstanding research achievements in social sciences, was selected into the "Cross-century Excellent Talents Training Plan" of the State Education Commission, and presided over the completion of the ninth five-year plan and the tenth five-year plan, and the doctoral program fund project of the Ministry of Education. He has published dozens of papers, undertaken and completed a number of national, provincial and ministerial projects, and was selected into the "Cross-century Talents" project of the Ministry of Education, enjoying special allowance from the State Council.
