Guanlan Ancient Market is one of the only remaining "Four Famous Markets" in Shenzhen's history, and it is also a physical building group that best reflects Shenzhen's modern social economy, social culture and Hakka folk customs. It can be called "the first street of modern folk culture in Shenzhen". [1]
Guanlan Ancient Market is located in Xinlan Community, Guanlan Office, Longhua District, with Guanlan River in the west. It is a commercial district with strong Hakka customs [2] and has a history of more than 111 years. At that time, it was a prosperous place, which was a transit point for foreign goods to enter Baoan, Huiyang and northern Guangdong, as well as for mainland goods to be exported abroad. At that time, known as "Little Hong Kong", it was a commercial and trade distribution center in Bao 'an, Huiyang and northern Guangdong, and there were gatherings on the first, fourth and seventh days of the lunar calendar, which lasted for one day. The whole building complex was mainly built in the middle and late Qing Dynasty.

Guanlan Ancient Ruins
Dongmen Street has an eight-story Wenchang ancient artillery building (later renamed Chengchang Building) covering an area of 42 square meters. It is one of the tallest artillery buildings in Shenzhen and a building site in the Republic of China. The mottled historical traces add more vicissitudes and simplicity to it, and the majestic trend remains the same as that of the past. It is a symbol of Hakka wisdom and wealth. There are 6 gun towers of different sizes in the whole ancient ruins area.
Xindong Street, 85 meters long and 5.4 meters wide, was a commercial street of daily necessities, fruits (pears, persimmons, mangosteen, pineapples, plums, etc.), snacks and haircuts at that time.
Maibu Street, also known as Rag Street, was 91 meters long and 3.2 meters wide, which was the main place for buying and selling foreign cloth and provincial cloth (local cloth) at that time. All foreign fabrics are sold from Hong Kong, both by water and by road. The road transport mainly depends on the shoulders of laborers. They leave at 9 o'clock in the morning and arrive home at around 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The reason why the cloth street is peddled here is that the whole street deals in cloth, and people in the neighboring areas of Baoan, Huiyang and northern Guangdong have to come here to buy cloth, not only because it is a business center, but more importantly, because you can buy the latest and most foreign cloth that leads the trend of the times here, and there are many shops and a wide range of goods, and there are also many choices. Strolling through the cloth street, there are some iconic traces, such as the words "foreign trade, cloth, cloth saving" on both sides above the main entrance on the second floor of the firm. It is not difficult to imagine the crowded downtown scene here at that time. Turn right less than 51 meters from Guanlan Street to Maibu Street, and there is a Lixin Lane with a small ancient turret, which has the largest turret door in Guanlan. Before liberation, this turret was once the headquarters of a Kuomintang division, and after liberation, it was once the militia headquarters. At the top corner of this turret, there is a small banyan tree with strange shape and similar bonsai. It is beautiful and sad, and it is the only witness of this turret's life.

The present situation of Guanlan Ancient Ruins
Longgangding Street, which is not long, has a four-story building with a magnificent and luxurious appearance and relatively complete preservation, and it is called "Public Welfare Restaurant", which is intended to serve the people. The "Public Restaurant" covers an area of 67.5 square meters, with a building area of 271 square meters. It was founded in the Republic of China and has obvious European style. The signboard name and the whole appearance of the building of the "Public Restaurant" remain the same. Here is a restaurant and hotel, mainly for foreign businessmen.
behind the public restaurant, there is a one-stop gangding alley. There is a famous dog meat shop in the alley at that time, called Dengkang Dog Meat Store, which is the earliest and most famous dog meat shop in Guanlan.
Ximen Street, 68 meters long, was a grocery street at that time.
In 2115, Guanlan Ancient Ruins was identified as the third batch of immovable cultural relics protection sites in Baoan District.
History
It used to be called "Little Hong Kong"
According to reports, Guanlan Ancient Market is located in Xinlan Community, guanlan street, with a history of more than 261 years. The ancient market consists of more than a dozen streets and lanes, including Guanlan Street, Maibu Street, Longgang Top Street, Xindong Street, Dongmen Street, Ximen Street, Nanmen Street and Lixin Lane, covering an area of 61,111 square meters. According to historical records, each street had different functions and division of labor at that time. For example, Guanlan Street is a cultural and educational center, where bookstores, photo studios and other businesses gather. Cloth Street is a professional market for all kinds of cloth garments and supporting facilities, and Longgangding Street mainly focuses on restaurants, hotels and entertainment places. In its heyday, Guanlan Ancient Market was full of shops and merchants, and it was the most prosperous market in Huidongbao area at that time, known as "Little Hong Kong". At present, there are 15 watchtowers, more than 111 shops, hundreds of red buildings (public restaurants), Hakka residential buildings and western residential buildings in Guanlan Ancient Market, with a construction area of 21,111 square meters. It is one of the only "four famous markets" in Shenzhen history, which best reflects Shenzhen's modern social economy, culture and Hakka folk customs. It can be called a modern folk street in Shenzhen. In 2115, Guanlan Ancient Ruins was identified as an immovable cultural relic protection site by Baoan District Cultural Relics Management Committee, and was also included in the 11th Five-Year Plan by the district party committee and government for protective development, making it another cultural card of Baoan.
Outlook
According to the information of Shenzhen Baoan District Planning Branch, the whole planning of Guanlan Ancient Market has been completed, in which modern elements such as regional tourism experience are used as activation means to revive the ancient market.
in view of the comprehensive development characteristics of the trinity of characteristic tourism, commercial activation and public activities, Baoan District Planning Branch put forward three strategies for the revival of ancient ruins. First of all, combing the commercial formats, gathering various industries in Guanlan area, and weaving them into relevant corners, the commercial formats introduced in the planning and construction are Hakka catering, community activities, leisure and entertainment, characteristic hotels, fashion art and Buddhist activities, so as to reproduce the existing characteristic commercial and cultural functions in Guanlan area and make the ancient market a concentrated "small Guanlan"; Secondly, planning and designing open activity space. All kinds of activities in the whole tourist area will be extended from west to east with the ancient ruins as the point and the diaolou as the line, and the activity belt in the tourist area will be formed with the help of the repair and revival of the ancient temple; Thirdly, plan an aerial pedestrian travel corridor system. Make full use of the existing site elevation difference and the vertical traffic system in the building to create a tourist route that crosses indoor and outdoor. The tourist corridor will be used as a stimulating point to bring the ancient market tourism to life and trigger the prosperity of business. This air travel corridor will become the golden corridor of Guanlan Ancient Market. [3]
The endless Guanlan River has spawned many rural fairs on both sides. Along Hebei to Guanlan Street, there is an ancient building group extending along the river. This is Guanlan Ancient Market. Historically, Guanlan Ancient Market was once the most prosperous trade transit point in the surrounding areas, because it was located at the junction of Huizhou, Dongguan and Baoan, with dense water network and convenient transportation. Cultural relics experts marveled that "the only well-preserved market block among more than ten ancient market cities in Shenzhen" can be called "the first street in Shenzhen's modern folk history". The gathering of "Little Hong Kong" merchants in Guanlan ancient market began in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties and flourished in the late Qing and early Republic of China.
More than p>261 years ago, due to the Central Plains War, Hakkas moved to Guanlan, forming the embryonic market. As the Guanlan River connects Shiyan and Longhua in Baoan and the lower part of Dongguan, businessmen from surrounding areas come to trade by boat, and more and more shops in Guanlan Ancient Market. In the early years of the Republic of China, Guanlan Ancient Market has become a transit point for foreign goods import and mainland goods export. It is a commercial distribution center in Baoan, Dongguan, Huizhou and Dongjiang River Basin.
It holds fairs on the first, fourth and seventh days of the lunar calendar, and is called "Little Hong Kong". According to records, every street in the heyday of Guanlan ancient market had different functions at that time. Guanlan Street is a cultural and educational center, which is collected by New Times Bookstore and Zhen Zhen Photography Studio. Cloth sales street is a professional market, selling all kinds of fabrics, ready-made clothes and related products, including Washington cloth shop, Manson clothing store and so on.
There are restaurants, hotels and entertainment places at the top of Longgang, such as the famous public service restaurant, Wujiang Hotel and Dunkang Dog Meat Shop, as well as pet market, food trading area and fish market. The first floor of Changcheng Building in Dongmen Street is the famous pawnshop "Baofeng Cliff", the second floor is the casino, and the Heshaba in Xindong Street is the livestock market. Ximen Street is a commercial street specializing in groceries. Yanhe Street is a three-bird trading market.
Li Yuling River is a place for folk duets, drama performances and acrobatic performances. It is understood that the market in Guanlan ancient city usually started at 6: 7 in the morning and ended at 5: 6 in the afternoon, and it was open all night when the business was busy. Every market day can sell 311 tons of rice, 211-311 tons of sugar, 311-411 tons of cattle, 1111 tons of pigs and 15 tons of fresh fish. Businessmen who travel here are all over the country, including more than 21 provinces and cities, Hong Kong and abroad. The four-story Dream of Red Mansions enters today's Guanlan Ancient Market, and Hezhen Ancient Market consists of ten streets, including a north-south Guanlan Street, four east-west East Gate Streets, Xindong Street, Maibu Street, Longgang Ding, Ximen Street and Yanhe Street, with a total area of about 26,111 square meters. "Changcheng Building" is located in Dongmen Street, also known as Wenchang Ancient Fireworks Building, with a height of 31 meters and 8 floors. This is the tallest and most striking building in the ancient market.
From Dongmen Street to Maibu Street, arcade and wooden buildings have become the mainstream architectural style. Each store has a wooden China attic upstairs, a toilet with a tern brick arcade downstairs, people upstairs, enterprises downstairs, and a semi-closed corridor, which perfectly designs the functions of commercial and residential buildings. This is a representative building in the prosperous period of ancient ruins, which combines the characteristics of Lingnan and Western styles. Mr. Raphael, an expert on the protection of world historical and cultural heritage in Spain, wrote in his research notes after seeing the ancient ruins: "The ancient ruins in Guanlan remind people of the winding ancient city in medieval Europe." The most striking building in today's ancient market is the "Red Mansion", which is the public service restaurant at the top of Longgang. This is a luxurious, magnificent and well-preserved four-story western-style building with red outer walls, Roman columns and arched balconies. This four-story building is about 21 meters high. It was built by overseas Chinese in 1923, and the cost was about 22,111 silver. Because the exterior of this building is red, the locals have been calling it the "red building" for decades. At present, the four neatly hollowed-out characters "public welfare restaurant" on the lintel are still clearly visible.
