History:

Hong Kong's general holidays originated from the Bank Holidays Order 1871 made by the United Kingdom in the 19th century, through which the British government wanted to suspend business transactions by stopping the operation of banks so that the whole community could enjoy the holidays. Hong Kong's general holidays covered only the banking industry and not all employees, so they were called bank holidays, and were gradually extended to the government, the public **** sector and educational institutions.

Hong Kong's general holidays were first established in 1875, when nine holidays were specified; on the other hand, statutory holidays were first established in 1961, when only six days were specified, so they were called labor holidays. Since 1967, Hong Kong has maintained 17 days of general holidays, but there has been no increase in the number of labor holidays since it was increased to 12 days in 1999. Therefore, the inequity between blue and white collar workers extends from 1875 to 2021, a total of 146 years.
