Kansai International Airport is the world's first 100 percent reclaimed artificial island airport, and it is also one of the world's largest maritime international airports. However, a marine airport is not the same as reclaiming land. The world's first marine airport was Nagasaki Airport, which opened in 1975. Nagasaki Airport was not 100% reclaimed land, but was created by filling a 0.9 square kilometer island, Minoshima, with 2.44 square kilometers of land. Kansai International Airport is located about 38 kilometers from Osaka City and about an hour's drive from the center of Osaka. Construction of the airport began in 1987 and on September 22, 1994, the airport was officially opened. The airport is operated by New Kansai International Airport Co. In the early stages of planning, the airport was tentatively referred to as Kansai New Airport (Japanese: Kansai New Airport), or by a small group of locals as Izumi Airport (泉州空港), due to the name of its location.
