Japanese usually go back to their hometown when celebrating the New Year. Pine branches were placed at the door of the house and the door of the shop. Major businesses have discounts and promotions, and department stores have big gift packages. Many Japanese people will put on traditional kimonos, burn incense in temples, make wishes, beg for visas, listen to the New Year bell, and go to the mountains to watch the sunrise on New Year's Day. Then, eat rice cakes, break wooden barrels, divide wine, eat kelp and turtle.
