Unit 1 It's the band which gets everyone dancing.

LingLing: There are many people here!

Tony: Everyone wants to go to the school dance. The difficulty is that I want to get some good pictures, but I can't see people over their

heads.

Damien: Are you going to enter the photo contest?

Tony: Sure! By the way, is that Hezhong out front? What's he doing here?

Betty: Same as you!

Damien: Who's He Zhong?

Tony: He's the photographer who won the last photo contest.

Damien: The guy who won the photo contest last summer?

Tony: Quite right.

LingLing: boo! It's the Blues Boys playing! It's the band that gets everyone dancing to Lei.

Tony: Those drums sure are loud. Maybe I'll go upstairs.

Betty: Okay, but watch your camera!

Betty: Hi Tony. How's it going for you?

Tony: Hi, I grabbed some photos of the boy playing the guitar on the left. Where is Herzhong?

Betty: He left early. He had a problem with his camera.

Tony: Great, now I have a chance to win.

Ling: But Tony? Where's your camera?

Tony: It's here, in my bag oh no it's not!

Betty: You're kidding!

Tony: But I had it with me earlier, maybe I left it upstairs?

Betty: He's upset.

Ling: His father is going to be the most upset.

Tony's dad: everyone!

Betty: Oh! Mr. Smith! Help! I mean? Hello! Tony? Uh, we weren't expecting to see you!

Tony's Dad: I'm over Lei to pick up Tony, has he tried my camera yet?

Unit 2 Read on to find out who the winners are.

Student Photography Competition Results

We're very pleased with the photography competition. We received more photos compared to previous years. While all of the photos were

excellent, we could not give an award to everyone. There were four prizes in the contest, so keep reading down to find out who the winners were.

The winner of the "Most Beautiful Nature" award is

15-year-old Li Wei. Li Wei took some photos of mountains in Xiangshan Park. The park is not far from his home, about

500

meters, and he is familiar with it.

Our favorite photo in the "Historical China" group was taken by Zhao Min. Zhao is just

12

years old. She photographed Tiananmen Square

-

the largest public **** square in the world. It is

880

meters long from north to south and

500

meters wide at the north end. Her photo perfectly

shows the scale and beauty of Tiananmen Square.

The best photo in the "Music" category was taken by He Zhong. He photographed this year's best band, Footprints of Madness.

He's photo shows singer Becky Wong and the band Crazy Footprints performing at a concert in Shenzhen. He found a way to show off the movement and sound of this very good new band, and the fun the fans were having.

A photo collection called "The Many Faces of Our City," which featured Beijing, won a prize in the "Most Unusual"

category. Three students at the same school were busy with this entry. It included photos of different parts of the city, the old and the

new, and it succeeded in showing the rich culture that makes Beijing famous.

Thanks to our winners and to everyone who participated in the contest. We were lucky enough to have the famous

Photographer John Williams in China to talk about his new book. He has agreed to present the award at the awards ceremony at the end of this month.

Module 9 Cartoon stories

Unit 1 We need someone like Superman who can save Tony.

Daiming: Ao, geez! Where's the camera? What will Tony's dad say?

Betty: It's like a cartoon story.

Ling: Why?

Betty: I can picture every picture in this cartoon, and I know how it will end.

Daiming: I like cartoons with lots of jokes.

LingLing: But this isn't funny, this is serious.

Betty: It's not one of those cartoons that makes you laugh.

Damien: and my favorite characters are heroes like Boomer or Batman.

Ling: we need someone like Superman who can save Tony?

Mr. Jackson: Hi, I'm looking for Tony.

Damien: There he is!

Mr. Jackson: Can you tell him I'd like to speak to him? I have a camera with his name on it and it's on the building

.

Damien: That's good news. Do you want me to give it to him?

Mr. Jackson: Okay! Here you go.

Betty: Ao, Tony's dad is going over to talk to him.

Dameen: If Tony tells his dad he lost the borrowed camera, he's in big trouble.

Ling: How can we let Tony know that we've found his dad's camera?

Daiming: I know! Let's take a picture. He'll see the flash.

Betty: That's a smart idea! Give it to me!

Ling: Okay, that might not be very funny, but maybe it'll be a cartoon with a happy ending.

Betty: And I'll be Superman!

Unit 2 There are several fan clubs in china which have held birthday parties for Tintin.

Nemo, a clever orange-and-white fish, and Shrek, a giant green monster, are hugely popular among young people in China and all over

world's youth are hugely popular. These popular cartoon heroes are everywhere, on desks, in handbags and on computer

brain screens.

But there are some older popular cartoons. The cartoon Monkey King just celebrated its "40th birthday". The cartoon, called

"The Greatest Showman," tells the story of a monkey who leads a group of monkeys against the rules of heaven. But it is the mischief that monkey does that is

most remembered. "It's a mess" became a common expression for fathers (mothers) or bosses when they came home or to the office

and saw a mess.

Another popular cartoon character who celebrated a major birthday in China was a reporter with red hair and a

white dog. Tintin has been

popular

for

75

years since Belgian cartoonist Else created the character in

1929

. His books have been translated into

50

more than 50

languages and roughly 200 million copies have been bought. In

1984

December

Tintin's entire series began to be released in China. Many Chinese people still have many black-and-white versions of the books about Tintin in their collection.

Several fan clubs in China held birthday parties for Tintin in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing and Wuhan.

Finally, Snoopy, Charlie Brown's lovable dog who lives in his own private fantasy world, celebrated his "fiftieth birthday" in

2000

by Snoopy fans in China.

"I don't just create cartoons for children. Adults with life experience can understand them better." Charles Schultz

Schultz, the creator of Snoopy and the cartoon "Peanuts," later said.

Module 10 Fitness

Unit 1 I've got a friend whose brother is training for the Olympics.

Ling: How's your basketball training going?

Tony: It's okay, but I'm a little tired. My legs hurt a little.

LingLing: If you want to stay healthy, don't give up. You're lucky you only play on varsity. I have a friend whose

brother is preparing for the Olympics. Damien: We have a boy on our team whose parents want him to go to a sports school, but he's not healthy or

strong enough.

Ling: He needs to work out more - go running or go to weight training.

Damien: So, what happened to the camera, Toni?

Toni: Don't talk to me about that! See I think my dad guessed I almost lost it at the school dance. I'm not allowed to use it anymore.

Dameen: But we need some pictures for the next basketball game. Are you going to buy a camera?

Toni: No way! My father was the one who gave me my allowance, and I almost lost his camera.

Betty: Hey everyone, guess what happened? I just ran into the principal. He said he wanted to see me.

Damien: What's going on?

Betty: He wanted to talk about the New Standards,

Damien: Ask him if he wants to write something about staying healthy.

Betty: He doesn't look like someone interested in health.

Dameen: Betty, good luck.

Unit 2 Jamie is a cook whose ideas are changing school dinners.

Make me eat better

Jamie Oliver is a young chef who like to improve school meals. In

2005

he went back to the school to see what the children were eating

.

Jamie asked the children how their meals were.

"We eat hamburgers,

chips or pizza,

" they told,

"There is

sometimes fruit, but we prefer ice cream." Jamie thinks it's poo terrible that kids are eating junk food, and that

is a problem. Junk food isn't just bad for the body. Kids who eat unhealthy lunches are hard to teach in the afternoon. Teachers say

that those kids do poorly after lunch.

When Jamie brought vegetables into the class, the kids didn't know what they were. Jamie recognized that the kids didn't know about healthy

foods, and then he talked to the people who worked in the kitchen. He realized that they didn't know enough about food and health,

and that they didn't have a lot of money to spend.

He decided to teach cooks and children about healthy food. It was a daunting task! It cooked them healthy meals that included

meat, rice, pasta and vegetables, but many of the teens refused to eat the new meals. Jamie explains to them

why junk food is unhealthy. In the end, when Jamie taxed them to try his cooking, they loved it.

Jamie talked to the government department and he told them that they needed to ban junk from schools, train the cooks, and educate

the kids to spend more money on meals. Perhaps parents, teachers and children agree with him. Newspapers wrote articles about him, and TV

station programs broadcast interviews with him in schools. Jamie is the chef who is party to changing school meals across the UK.

Module 11 Population

Unit 1 It's the biggest city in China.

Tony: So, what's next for the New Standards?

Daiming: How about another "homework helper"?

Tony: What's this week's homework?

LingLing: It's about population. There are too many people, not enough space, and too many cars. , noise and pollution.

Daiming: well, it's just right that we talk about it in a place like this. Beijing is a big city.

Lingling: But Chongqing is China's biggest city. But a growing population is an environmental problem in many countries.

Tony: There's also crowdedness, smoking, and transportation problems. Let's check some facts? Ah, how about this one? There are

259

babies born every

minute.

LingLing: That's 136,130,400 babies born every year.

Tony: And, China's population is about

1.3

billion?

LingLing

:

About twenty percent of the world's population.

Tony: Hello, Betty. How was your meeting with the principal:

Betty:

Hello!

It was okay.

You know,

The school is having an awards ceremony next week.

There's the usual form of awards,

basketball?

Damien: And a photo contest?

Betty: And a special award to the New Standard, the best up-and-coming school magazine in Beijing.

Daiming: That's thanks to my "homework helper."

Betty: Guess who's going to be giving out the awards?

Dameen: I don't know!

Betty: The King of Becky

Singer of Crazy Feet

and the guy who started The New Criterion.

Tony: I don't believe it!

Unit 2 It was a quiet country village.

Urban Thoughts

Joe,

15

years old, lives in Parkville.

When Joe's grandparents first came to Parkville 50

years ago, it was a quiet mountain village in the middle

of the country. Back then, there was a small house on the edge of their town, some heaven and earth, and mountains in the distance.

But Parkwell was close to the big city of Alnwick with about

200

million people. People from the countryside began to arrive in Alnwick to find

work and a better life. Of course

they needed places to live. However, living in the center of Alnwick was expensive, so

the city council decided to build apartments on the edge of the city. Soon Parkville became a suburb of Alnwick. It now has a population of

1 million

. Chow's family lives in one of the new apartments - there is no longer room for a small house there.

5

Years ago, the small local school in Parkwell closed. Joe went to a school near the center of Alnwick.

There were

2000

pupils there. No one knew the names of all of them.

Jo takes an hour to get to school, adding to traffic and pollution. But it wasn't her fault. She liked her old school.

Arnwick needed a bigger hospital and more doctors. Better public **** transportation and fewer private cars. It needs to have

shops and office buildings. It also needs clean water and no litter on the streets. Managing a big city is also tough when it comes to protecting people from

crime. So it also needs more laws and police, and more taxes to pay for it all

.

So what do you think of all this? Do you like what's happening in Parkville? The fact that "urban fantasy"

is just a story. But does your town have the same problems as Alnwick?

Module 12 Summer in LA

Unit 1 Your host family is meeting you at the airport.

Ling: How are you

Your hair looks great! And you look handsome, Damien.

Damien: My new pants are a little tight....
