Historical Origins of Cigars
The Native Americans, located on the Yucatan peninsula in present-day Mexico, were probably the first to grow tobacco. It was only afterward that tobacco was cultivated in South and North America. The first people to grow tobacco, or smoking tobacco, have not been traced, but it is certain that Europeans did not know of the existence of tobacco until after Columbus discovered the New World on his voyage in 1492.
Everything began with Columbus' discovery of the New World, when two of Columbus' sailors found that the Cuban Indians used palm fronds or plantain leaves to roll up dried, twisted tobacco leaves and smoke them, which is the original cigar. Research revealed that the island had a never-before-seen plant, and that the natives used the leaves of this plant, dried them and then burned and inhaled their smoke.
Columbus brought the discovered tobacco seeds back to plant, and it became the latest trend for European aristocrats. The main leaves were rolled into cigars, and the leftovers and bad leaves were used as cigarettes and pipe tobacco. The government realized that more and more people were smoking tobacco, so they began to draw taxes to make money.
