Nanjing Lukou International Airport is an important domestic trunk airport and the main cargo airport in East China. Nanjing Lukou International Airport covers an area of 9,562 acres, the flight area is according to the 4E standard, and the airport implements the 24-hour operation service, with one runway (3,600m×60m) and one taxiway (3,600m×45m), and it is able to meet the requirements for the landing and taking off of large wide-body passenger aircraft such as Boeing 747-400 and other large aircraft. Since the opening of Nanjing Lukou International Airport on July 1, 1997, Nanjing Lukou International Airport has always been focusing on the work policy of "safety first, civilization first, and efficiency as the center", and the aviation business has continued to grow at a high speed since 2003, with the annual passenger throughput increasing by more than one million passengers, and the passenger throughput in 2008 reached 8.88 million. In November 2008, the National Civil Aviation Administration and Jiangsu Provincial Government jointly approved the master plan of Lukou Airport. The approved master plan of the airport, with a target of 2040, has a passenger throughput of 70 million and a cargo and mail throughput of 160 tons, with a total controlled land area of 28.7 square kilometers, and four parallel runways to be built. The plan adjusts the strategic positioning of Lukou Airport to "China's large-scale hub airport, air cargo and express center", and simultaneously builds the airport ground transportation system, especially the rail transit from the airport to Nanjing Railway South Station, to ensure the rapid distribution of air passengers and cargo, so as to make the airport truly become a hub of regional transportation.
