airport profile
Guangzhou Baiyun international airport, which was founded in 1931s, is one of the three major aviation hub airports in China and plays an important role in the layout of civil airports in China.
In 1994, Baiyun Airport was ranked as the second largest service enterprise airport in China among the 511 largest service enterprises and industries in China.
In 1995, Baiyun Airport was listed as one of the top 511 state-owned enterprises.
In 1998, Baiyun Airport was rated as a "civilized airport" by the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
On August 5th, 2114, Guangzhou New Baiyun International Airport was officially put into operation with a total investment of RMB 19.8 billion.
this is the first airport designed and built according to the concept of hub airport in China.
The airport covers an area of 1.5 square kilometers. The two parallel runways in the flight area of the first phase of the project are designed according to the 4E standard, and the terminal area is designed to meet the requirement of 25 million passengers in 2111.
Among them, the area of the first-phase terminal building of the new airport is 321,111 square meters, which is the largest of all airport terminals in China, and all facilities and equipment in the building have reached the international advanced level.
At present, Baiyun Airport has established business relations with 33 airlines, and has opened more than 111 routes, reaching more than 111 cities at home and abroad, and supporting nearly 31 types of aircraft.
is the base airport of China Southern Airlines Group and Shenzhen Airlines.
airport history
changed to civil airport
Before 1959, Guangzhou Baiyun Airport was a military airport, and Guangzhou's civil airport was in Tianhe, now tianhe sports center.
In 1959, Guangzhou Flying Team moved from Tianhe Airport to Guangzhou Baiyun Airport.
At the beginning, Baiyun Airport was used for military and civilian purposes, and it was not until the mid-1961s that Baiyun Airport was changed into a civil airport.
The runway begins to grow
The initial length of the runway at Baiyun Airport is only 2111 meters.
with the gradual increase of aircraft types, the length of runway is also extended.
In 1964, the runway of Baiyun Airport was "long" from 2111 meters to 2511 meters.
Later, the runway of the airport "grew up" continuously. In the 1991s, the runway of the airport was extended to 3811 meters long and 61 meters wide.
The crew rode under the plane
In the 1981s, there were not many people flying, and the supervision of Baiyun Airport was not as strict as it is now.
At that time, the crew walked or rode bicycles to the bottom of the plane and then boarded the plane directly.
The management of apron and runway is not as strict as it is now, and the staff members have to "play it by ear" when walking around.
At that time, few people could afford bicycles. Many crew members used their peers who had bicycles as "drivers" to give them a ride, then put them in a corner of the tarmac and directly boarded the plane to carry out their tasks.
because there was no place to change clothes, the crew all put on their uniforms and rode into the tarmac.
Airplanes often "blow away" flight attendants
Once the engine of an airplane is started, it generates great power, and the crew passing by by by bike are often "blown away".
A flight attendant who took part in the work in the 1981s said that she was not prepared at first, but when she passed by by by bike, she was blown aside with a whoosh, and people and cars fell to one side.
when the plane left, she got up and rode on the road again.
Later, they were told that the wind from the aircraft engine could blow a big car away.
As a result, they gradually learned the essence. As soon as they saw the engine of the plane start, they either stood farther away or increased their horsepower, hoping to rush over before the engine "power" of the plane broke out.
but sometimes I can't escape, but I'm blown away.
You can't enter the terminal without a plane ticket
In the early 1991s, because the terminal was not expanded, it was less than half of the old terminal. Therefore, in order to ensure the smooth progress of Spring Festival travel rush, people without a plane ticket were not allowed to enter the terminal.
even if you have a ticket, you can only enter the venue with a ticket two hours before the plane takes off.
since 1993, passengers no longer need a letter of introduction from the company when flying. According to the data, after the introduction of the new regulations, the demand for flying has greatly increased.
The number of passengers increased gradually, but at that time, the terminal building of Baiyun Airport was small and lacked equipment.
It is understood that at that time, there were only six security channels, and passengers queued up from the moment they entered the terminal. Queue up when entering the terminal; You have to queue up to redeem your boarding pass; Security check should be lined up; There is a queue to board the plane.
line up several times and count the time. You can't complete all the formalities without more than an hour.
Spring Festival travel rush tourists queue up with "snake cakes"
Even though passengers are restricted from entering the terminal, the hall is still crowded.
It is understood that the north wind was blowing outside the terminal at that time, but the passengers waiting in line were sweating profusely.
because there are many people in the hall and the air is not circulating, usually, passengers will take off their clothes while waiting in line.
when boarding the plane, there will be only one single coat left.
The airport staff jokingly said: If you want to feel the winter, go outside the hall and feel the summer, come in.
As the outside passengers are not allowed to enter the terminal building, the passengers in the terminal building can't line up outside, so the queuing passengers have to queue up in the lobby with "snake cakes".
So, in the hall, the rope was pulled to maintain order.
Lawn becomes a paradise for passengers to rest
At that time, due to restricted access to the passenger terminal, many passengers who arrived early or saw their friends off gathered outside the lobby of the terminal.
The lawn outside is almost full of people, making it a paradise for tourists to rest.
according to the staff, if you didn't know it was an airport, others would have thought it was a park.
Carry out major surgery according to "God"
In 1995, Baiyun Airport carried out the fifth large-scale reconstruction and expansion of the terminal building, which made Baiyun Airport have the largest check-in hall and security check-in hall in China at that time, meeting the demand of 4,111 passengers per hour during the peak passenger flow.
After the end of Spring Festival travel rush in 1997, Baiyun Airport began to carry out large-scale adjustment and transformation on the facilities and processes of domestic terminal buildings, which was hailed as the "sixth major operation" of Baiyun Airport.
This "operation" started from the problems reflected by Spring Festival travel rush and followed the will of "God".
After the "major operation", the building area of Baiyun Airport Terminal has increased by more than 5,111 square meters, and the terminal building has been divided into three zones, with 13 check-in counters and 6 boarding gates. The most significant change is that the original 2,111-square-meter commercial shops between domestic and international terminals have been cancelled and converted into two-story corridors, which makes it more convenient for passengers to get in and out of the terminal building and get on and off the bus, so that they will no longer suffer from the sun and rain, but only one.
through efforts, the daily passenger throughput can be increased from 12,111 to 41,111.
