Beijing 798 Art District, located in the 718 compound of Jiuxianqiao in the northeast of Beijing's Chaoyang District, is an art district featuring contemporary art that was gradually developed in the early 21st century on the basis of the unused space of the original industrial buildings.
Beijing 798 Art District covers an area including the former 798 Factory, 706 Factory, 797 Factory, 707 Factory, and 718 Factory (now merged into Beijing Seven Stars Huadian Science and Technology Group Co., Ltd.), with a total building area of 230,000 square meters. Its main buildings were designed and constructed by former East German experts in the 1950s, adopting the world's most advanced technology and Bauhaus design concepts at that time, emphasizing artistry in practicality, with the building's distinctive period features, concise shape, and complete and tall internal space. The high skylight on the north side of the building creates a more homogeneous indoor light environment, which is well adapted to the architectural and spatial needs of contemporary art activities.
Due to the attraction of the Bauhaus building and the surrounding factory area with its quiet environment and convenient transportation, artists of different styles have been coming here since 2002, and Beijing 798 Art District has gradually become a gathering area for sculpture, painting, photography, and other independent art studios, galleries, art bookstores, fashion stores, advertisement design, environmental design, boutique home design, restaurants, bars, and other kinds of cultural and art spaces. At present, there are nearly 300 cultural and art organizations in Beijing 798, which has become an important distribution center for Chinese contemporary art and an influential cultural industry zone at home and abroad.
At present, Beijing 798 Art Zone has been listed by the Beijing Municipal Government as one of the first 10 cultural and creative industry clusters, and has been listed by the Chaoyang District Government as one of the first cultural and creative industry clusters in Chaoyang District. In order to accelerate the healthy and orderly development of the art zone, the Chaoyang District Government and Seven Stars Group*** established the Beijing 798 Art Zone Construction Management Office to strengthen the scientific guidance, standardized management and effective services for the art zone. Under the joint efforts of both parties, the atmosphere of 798 Art Zone as a "creative area and cultural park" is taking shape.
