Article 56 of the Military Service Law of People's Republic of China (PRC) stipulates that after discharged from active service, conscripts shall be accepted and placed by the people's governments of counties, autonomous counties, cities and municipal districts where they were originally recruited according to the principle of where they came from and where they went back:

(1) After retiring from active service, the people's governments of townships, nationality townships and towns shall make proper arrangements for their production and life. When state organs, organizations, enterprises and institutions recruit workers in rural areas, veterans should be given priority under the same conditions. Those who have won the prize of Class II or above shall be arranged according to the provisions of Item (2) of this article.

(2) After discharged from active service, conscripts living in towns shall be arranged by the people's governments of counties, autonomous counties, cities and municipal districts or the people's governments at higher levels or the people's governments of provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government. State organs, organizations, enterprises and institutions, regardless of the nature of ownership and organizational form, have the obligation to resettle veterans in accordance with relevant state regulations. Employees of government organs, organizations, enterprises and institutions before enlistment are allowed to return to work or resume work.

(three) during the period of urban veterans to be resettled, the local people's government shall issue a living allowance in accordance with the principle of not less than the local minimum living standard.

(four) self-employed urban veterans, by the local people's government to give a one-time economic subsidies and preferential policies.

(five) conscripts who apply for national civil servants, institutions of higher learning and secondary specialized schools after leaving active service shall be given preferential treatment in accordance with the relevant provisions.
