***Hanging Farm: Red Fruit Tree + Tavern Remodeling
For those who live in Beijing, it takes only an hour or so to drive north, and then the scene in front of you can be "green" all the way from the forest of high-rise buildings.
At the foot of Yanshan Mountain, Miyun District, Zhangjiazhuang village, a village with urban development and increasingly "hollowed out" ushered in its revival.
Zhangjiazhuang Village General Axis Map
The site's original village style and architectural forms remain relatively intact, and the villagers' pace of life is leisurely against the backdrop of modern culture. This state of affairs provides a space for busy city dwellers to think about and remember, as they have the vision of "seeking the wild for the loss of rituals" and desire to embrace the Walden Lake style of natural living atmosphere.
For architects, the possibility of diverse development of cities and nature is hard to find, while the original countryside is a fertile ground full of hope, which is enough to reorganize the relationship between human beings, architecture, and nature, and to internalize and give shape to the traditional and current local culture, so that it can be transformed into visible and sensible forms and symbols, and penetrate into life.
The two smallest houses in Zhangjiazhuang village (each occupying two and a half minutes of land, or about 166 square meters) have become the experimental field for architects of "spatial evolution", integrating two types of businesses, residential and business, into the tide of the village's rejuvenation. The two small courtyards are spaced about 50 meters apart, and each of them has its own chapter and echoes each other, forming an attraction and demonstration effect, opening up new possibilities for the realization of the overall evolution of the village space as a whole with a point to lead to the whole.
Residence Mode:*** Enjoying the Red Fruit Tree of the Farm
The project is positioned as a rural B&B on the outskirts of the city, and the building needs to provide a completely different lifestyle for people who have been living in the city for a long time, and at the same time, it needs to satisfy the functional requirements of contemporary life. On a macro level, this preservation of and respect for rural culture and the introduction of new business models are leading to a cultural and economic structural change, shaping a unique oriental lifestyle.
Thus, the architects, in remodeling and renewing the original farmhouse, fully respected the spirit of place given by the rural environment, and preserved the spatial order of the original courtyard enclosure and the appearance of the building texture. In the courtyard, a "twenty-something" red fruit tree (locals call a kind of hawthorn with big fruit "red fruit" and think that "red fruit" is not hawthorn) is carefully preserved, and the scene of sitting around the tree awakens people to the spirit of the rural environment. The scene of sitting around the tree has awakened people's memories of nature and their homeland, and the compound of the ****Hang Farm is also called "Red Fruit Tree" after it.
As soon as you enter the village, following the guide of the green trees, you can see the small courtyard at the foot of the hill, and from a distance, the buildings do not show their presence, but humbly accompany the neighboring farmhouse.
The traditional Chinese courtyard layout order of "blocking" and "gathering energy" is restored in this ****enjoyment farmhouse, and the presence of the shadow wall has the property of a memory carrier, but also adds a layer of sequence to the entrance, allowing pedestrians on the outside to visualize what is hidden in the courtyard. The presence of the shadow wall has the property of a memory carrier and adds a layer of sequence to the entrance, allowing pedestrians from outside to imagine what is hidden in the courtyard.
The building is divided into two floors, with the first floor allocated to public **** space and guest rooms, and the second floor a full master bedroom with a tea room and a large outdoor terrace, which brings a sense of living close to nature into a relatively private space.
Elevation of "Red Fruit Tree"
The original building was built on a timber frame, which was low and dilapidated, with poor insulation. In order to improve the environment and meet the needs of living, the architects removed the roof and part of the walls, and built a new skeleton with concrete. Due to strict budgetary requirements, the tiles, rafters and wooden roof frames were reused after demolition.
In order to realize the visual penetration and coherence of the courtyard, the architects used a large area of glass as the main material for the north and south elevations of the first floor, so that when you are indoors, you can watch the spring and autumn, the morning and evening mist, and listen to the crisp sound of the rain hitting the flagstone floor, so that the natural scenery can become the landscape of life.
And this openness is separated from the outside of the courtyard, fully guaranteeing the privacy of the living space, which is a continuation of the inward-looking aesthetics of traditional houses.
In order to protect the outdoor activities from rain and sunshine, the building is equipped with a glass awning in the south direction and a wooden grille to filter the light. At the same time, the retention of the gray space is a reminiscence of the traditional architectural form of the "storm corridor", which has both functional and emotional values.
Inside, the architects used white as the dominant color, with outdoor materials such as logs and concrete extending into the space, complementing the overall view of the courtyard.
Furniture, ornaments, every detail retains the original texture and texture of the material, but also hides the delicacy and warmth of the handcrafted carving, presenting an exquisite and not lose the wild life container.
Business model: tavern
In Zhangjiazhuang village, there is no restaurant in the village, and you can only go to another village 3 kilometers away to have a meal. The "Bistro" is a business model born out of the demand for food and drink. The same respect for the site texture, the same two and a half house base area, the same is the transformation of the old farmhouse, the "bistro" than the "red fruit tree" more public **** attributes.
The courtyard wall facing the street is made of masonry, and the plain concrete of the building wall forms a very different style of texture, establishing the most intuitive attraction. There are no neighboring buildings on the site except for the north side, so the architects took advantage of this by treating the building as a "viewing machine", setting up windows in the fa?ade's best viewing positions to allow the near and far views to "enter the picture".
Elevation view of the bistro
In order to meet the sense of scale and flexibility of the commercial space, the architects raised the main building, which faces south, to two floors and made it taller to accommodate indoor dining activities.
The "space under the corridor" is continued from the "red fruit tree" to meet the demand for semi-outdoor dining.
In the courtyard, the sofas and chairs with warm color and texture are surrounded by a convivial atmosphere, while the green plants growing wildly in the concrete flower beds, bamboo, and stone walls are in the close-up view, and the short mountains and the blue sky are in the distant view, which make the atmosphere of the dining room even more "ecological".
The building's original timber frame was replaced with more structurally and functionally sound concrete, and the old materials removed were used to restore the remaining parts of the building.
The beams, purlins, and old walls are all restored to their original form, and become an evocation of memory - a collision and dialogue between the wisdom of traditional residential construction and the architectural language of contemporary civilization, which impresses everyone who comes to the Tavern.
In addition to the main function, the supporting function of serving the food and beverage is also essential, unlike ordinary restaurants, the taste of the countryside may need to stay and savor.
So, in addition to the main dining space, there are three small guest rooms and a master bedroom, each with windows facing the courtyard, living and sleeping among the bamboo shadows. It is hoped that city dwellers will come here for a meal, a view, a life, and enjoy a respite before setting off again.
To the countryside!
"Red Fruit Tree" and "Tavern", two and a half yards, two business possibilities. In addition to attracting foreign visitors and driving the new economy, these two small yards of local culture are like a mirror for local residents to see themselves, inspiring them to re-recognize their own territorial and cultural values, and providing a new option for career choices and the creation of living space. The protection of natural ecology and the continuation of traditional culture and folk art depend on this new movement towards the countryside.
