The Taklamakan Desert, which means "the place where you can't get in or out" in Uyghur, is often referred to as the "Sea of Death". It is located in the center of the Tarim Basin in South Xinjiang, the entire desert is about 1,000 kilometers long from east to west, and more than 400 kilometers wide from north to south, with a total area of 337,600 square kilometers, which is China's largest desert, second only to the Sahara Desert in Africa, and the world's second largest mobile desert.

Among the world's major deserts, the Taklamakan Desert is one of the most mysterious and seductive. The center of the desert has a typical continental climate, with strong winds and sands, large temperature variations, and little precipitation throughout the year. There are frequent sandstorms and sand dunes with peculiar shapes, up to 250 meters high. The most marvelous are the two red and white sand dunes, called the Holy Sepulchre Mountain. The top of the hill has been eroded by wind and formed a "big mushroom". Due to the upward and downward movements of the earth's crust, the sedimentary rocks composed of red sandstone and white gypsum are exposed on the ground, creating a distinctive red and white landscape.

The desert is surrounded by dense poplar forests and willow shrubs along the banks of the Yarkant River, the Tarim River, the Hotan River and the Chelsea River, forming a "green island of the sand sea". Especially across the desert on both sides of the Hotan River, growing reeds, poplars and other sandy weeds, constituting a "green corridor" in the desert, "corridor" within the gurgling water, oasis connected. In the forest belt lived hares, birds and other animals, but also for the "sea of death" added a little vitality. The expedition also found that the desert is rich in underground water storage, and is conducive to development. There is water, there is life, scientific research has overthrown the "forbidden zone of life theory". In the vast Han desert, so far found countless sites of ancient cities, Niya site has unearthed the Eastern Han Dynasty printed cotton cloth and embroidery.
