In 373 A.D., Emperor Xiaowu of the Eastern Jin Dynasty set up Jinxing County (now Yuxi Qingshiba) in Tongnan, which was the beginning of the establishment of the county. 1912, Dong'an County was set up in Zitong Town, which belonged to the county, and Dong'an County was renamed as Tongnan County in 1914 (the county was named because of being located in the southern part of Tongchuan Prefecture.) After the liberation of the county on December 5th, 1949, the subordination was changed four times; it was subordinated to the Sui'ning Special Zone of the North Sichuan Provincial Administrative Office in 1950, and then cancelled by Mianyang Special Zone in 1958; and in 1976 it was subordinated to Mianyang Special Zone. After the liberation on December 5, 1949, Tongnan's affiliation changed four times; in 1950, it was attached to Suining Prefecture of Sichuan North Administration, and in 1958, Suining Prefecture was canceled and attached to Mianyang Prefecture, and in 1976, it was attached to Jiangjin Prefecture (renamed Yongchuan Prefecture in 1981), and in 1982, Yongchuan Prefecture was attached to Chongqing Municipality.
