Weixian Yuedao Academy
I. The origin of Weixian Yuedao Academy
With the signing of a series of unequal treaties, the feudal and autocratic Chinese empire opened wide, and western countries gained the right to preach freely in China. As a result, western churches and cultural forces gradually infiltrated from the coast to the inland.
About the development of the early Yuedaoyuan, we can find the following records from Weifang City Records:
In p>1882 (the eighth year of Emperor Guangxu's reign in Qing Dynasty), Mateer Robert M, an American Presbyterian pastor, came to Weixian to preach, and with the assistance of local parishioners, he bought land at the Dongguan of Laowei County to establish the Yuedaoyuan, which was built by the church. It is used to preach, run schools and run clinics.
On June 25th, 1911 (the 26th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign in Qing Dynasty), Chen Shuangchen (also known as Chen Xiqing), a boxer in Weixian County, led a group of people to burn down the "Yuedao Courtyard" of the Presbyterian Church, burning down 42 buildings and 136 bungalows.
In p>1912 (the 28th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign in Qing Dynasty), the Presbyterian Church in North America rebuilt and expanded the Yue Dao Yuan in Weixian County with the silver of "boxer indemnity" of Qing government. With sufficient funds, Yuedao College has developed on a large scale and become the Shandong headquarters of the Presbyterian Church in North America.
"Ledaoyuan" is located in the south bank of Yuhe River, three miles southeast of Dongguanmen, Weixian County at that time, and its former site is in Weifang No.2 Middle School in Shandong Province and the adjacent Weifang People's Hospital. The predecessor of Weifang No.2 Middle School was Guangwen Middle School, a school run by the former Yuedao Institute, and Weifang People's Hospital was developed from the then missionary hospital. At that time, Yuedaoyuan "occupied an area of more than 211 mu, and was once used as a church, education and medical and health center in Changwei area. Western priests, teachers and medical staff gathered here for this activity, and its place was very prominent. The bell tower in the courtyard was the landmark building in the eastern part of Weixian County at that time.
Second, the establishment of the concentration camp in Weixian
After the Lugouqiao Incident on July 7, 1937, the Japanese army occupied Jiaodong Peninsula at the end of that year. At that time, because the United States and other countries were neutral towards Japan, the Japanese army basically did not interfere with Yuedao Hospital, so foreign nationals from Yantai and Qingdao, which had fallen before Weixian, began to take refuge in the Yuedao Hospital in Weixian. At this time, the missionary, teaching and medical treatment were carried out in the hospital.
on February 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked pearl harbor and launched a long-planned Pacific war. the United States and Britain formally declared war on Japan. At this time, Japanese expatriates in Hawaii and other places in the United States took various measures to steal US military intelligence and serve Japanese militarism, which caused strong dissatisfaction in the United States. Therefore, the US government concentrated more than 61,111 Japanese living in San Francisco and other places in designated areas near Los Angeles, and was not allowed to contact the outside world. In retaliation for the United States, from the end of 1941, Japan searched all the priests, teachers and businessmen of its allies in China all over China, and forcibly took them into custody.
Because Weixian County is close to Jiaoji Railway,
