Kaiping city, Guangdong province.
Chikan Ancient Town is located on the bank of Tanjiang River in the middle of Kaiping City, Guangdong Province, adjacent to the three ports in the urban area. Historically, it was the seat of Kaiping County, and later it was moved to Sanbu Town, which is now Kaiping City. Chikan Town was originally divided by Xinhui County, because the tributaries of Tanjiang River surrounded Chikan Town.
Chikan is built along the Tanjiang River, with villages on the south bank and cities on the north bank. All-in-one arcades are far bigger than the huge foreign buildings in Kaiping Old Street. There is a small road called "Erma Road" sandwiched between the two main roads along the East Dixi Road along the river, and there are many longitudinal roads crossing with them to form the road network of the urban area. Chikan Town has a quaint taste of combining Chinese and Western styles, so it is called "the fifth ancient town in China".
Characteristics of Chikan Town
The arcades in Chikan Town are continuous, and there are many lanes in the town. Almost all sections such as Dixi Road, Didong Road, Zhonghua Road and Niuwei Road are composed of arcades. There are nearly 611 arcades in the book. Even if each arcade is 5 meters wide, the total length of arcade is close to 3 kilometers. The arcade is usually forty or fifty meters long and three stories high.
Along Dixi Road, the top decoration of the arcade on Zhonghua Road and other sections is gradually simple, but at Niuwei Road in Neijie, the arcade is almost reduced to two floors, and the decoration of the roof is also sloppy. In the bank street, the essence of arcade street, there are occasional defensive fortresses-watchtowers and western-style bell towers mixed with arcade groups.
