He said: five years ago, he was a brave man without fear; today, he is only halfway to a wise man, and he hopes to reach a wise man without confusion as soon as possible; in the future, he would like to be a benevolent man and bring more love to others.
The brave have no fear
Liu Yun used to be fearless.
When he accepted an offer from SK Telecom in late 2001, he had three hurdles.
There was a serious shortage of human resources, and the 10-room office at China World Trade Center was big enough to hold all of SK Telecom's China staff. The business outlook was foggy, with many foreign telecom giants languishing in the sensitive telecom sector, and SK Telecom was eager to explore China, where several China chiefs sent from its headquarters before Liu Yun had failed to make any headway.
The culture clash was unstoppable. "If you have a Korean subordinate who is senior and older than you, and you have to report to a young Chinese person, how will you communicate with him?" he said. Yoo Yoon was asked to answer this seemingly simple question during his final interview in Seoul in late 2001 with then SK Telecom chief Om Moon-soo.
But the difficulties did not deter Yoo. Bent on making a career in China's telecom industry, Yoo Yoon faces the challenges ahead with excitement, not fear.
"It's as small as being a nanny and thinking about every aspect of life for a resident, and as big as discussing strategy in China with headquarters and accompanying the president to meet with national leaders,......," Liu said, lamenting the difficulty of starting his own business. "
The peak of Liu Yun's career came in 2004 -- when the joint venture between SK Telecom (China) and China Unicom, known as Unicom Timeco, won China's first value-added telecommunications business license for a Sino-foreign telecom joint venture. It was a landmark event.
Wise men are not confused
After four years as CEO of SK Telecom China, Liu Yun's eyes have changed -- from excitement to serenity and even a bit of vicissitude.
It all started at the end of 2005, when the headquarters suddenly sent a South Korean to take over as chairman of the China region. The company wanted to strengthen its understanding and control of China's telecom market.
"If it was before, I would have resigned immediately. Because, I have to be NO.1." During that time, headhunters also frequently sent invitations to Liu Yun. Even, Liu Yun had considered whether to start a business.
"What kind of life should I choose? How can a person live a more meaningful life?" In this painful thinking, Liu Yun gradually became not so concerned about wealth, position, power, "I do not want to be Li Ka-shing, because I simply can not do. Now, whoever mentioned to me about getting rich overnight, I just laugh it off. In the past, I sometimes regarded myself as very big, and sometimes I had to admit that I was very small, and it was a painful thing to suffer. Now, I know exactly who I am."
"I accept the fact that we work well together, and in 2006 we had an extreme year in China, generating RMB 2.5 billion in revenue for headquarters."
In June 2006, SK Telecom signed a Strategic Alliance Framework Agreement with China Unicom Red Chip to become the latter's "sole and exclusive partner" in the CDMA business. At the same time, the company purchased US$1 billion in convertible bonds from Unicom Red Chip.
"I couldn't have done this on my own without his communication with headquarters. This incident gave me a better understanding of 'getting in giving up'."
Figuring out who you are and what you want to give up doesn't mean you're free of pressure. In the face of pressure, Liu Yun will communicate with more talented people, "some things, do not rush, if you can not pass this hurdle, let go first, after a period of time, it may be easier to reach."
After the age of 35, Liu Yun has attached great importance to physical health. "Before, I felt that death was far away from me. Now, as my children grow up and as some of my classmates leave this world, I have completely elevated health management to a strategic level. I have a regular Chinese doctor and I have to do a full physical examination twice a year. There is always 4-5 hours on weekends to play golf."
Doing all this doesn't make Liu Yun feel very satisfied with himself, and he believes that at 45, he's only halfway to being a wise man. Clearly, there is still some confusion within him that needs time to help him answer.
The benevolent man is invincible
In 2005, a South Korean resident was involved in an accidental car accident. As a CEO, Yoon Yoo was able to make it to the hospital every day to personally push the wheelchair and ask questions. "They are far away from home and unfamiliar with everything here, so a Chinese CEO's concern is more likely to make them feel at home," he said. Liu Yun feels that he has not done enough on the word "benevolence". Because benevolence requires more than love. Confucius said that a person can only be close to benevolence if he is strong, resolute, simple and prudent in his speech.
Dreams are calling
Undoubtedly, Liu Yun, who emphasizes responsibility, has a very strong sense of family. What excites Liu Yun most is not his work but his family life. He has a pair of children, a 12-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son, and Liu Yun feels he is the best role model for his children.
Yoon also has three dreams: to do a public service project related to the development of the country and the industry before he retires; to retire at the age of 50, after nearly 20 years, which he feels leaves too little time for his wife; and to spend more time on his children to help them surpass their father. Want them to dare to express their opinions from an early age, to be open and happy children, and hope that his sons and daughters can be more thoughtful and considerate of other children, and can come up with more good ideas in the team, and know how to win the respect of others.
Personal Opinion
→The trait I would like to leave my children with is definitely passion. Always have a sense of curiosity and impulse.
→Hired a specialized PR firm, but I didn't find the feeling. Finding a good PR assistant to have around gives a deeper understanding of the company and yourself.
→I have thought about failure. However, the biggest failures come and go, everything can still start from square one, and my wife and I can still teach.
Personal Honors
In 2006, he was awarded the title of "Economic Person of the Year in China's Information Industry";
In 2007, he was honored with the "Mondale World Managerial Achievement Award".
