The latest South Korean entry rules

On Jan. 1, local time, South Korea's Disease Management Agency announced that in order to prevent the spread of the epidemic, all foreigners entering the country must submit proof of a negative nucleic acid (PCR) test 72 hours before departure.

South Korean airports and ports will implement the measure from Jan. 8 and Jan. 15, respectively, Yonhap news agency reported.

South Korea will require from July 2020 that entrants from countries and regions that are key to epidemic prevention submit proof of a negative PCR test upon entry.

After South Korea reported its first case of the new coronavirus variant on Dec. 28, the country's government decided to further tighten border controls by requiring all arrivals from the U.K. and South Africa to submit proof of negative PCR testing.

South Korea suspends flights with UK

The ban on flights targeting the UK has been extended by one week until January 7, 2021, to prevent the introduction of the new crown variant strain into the country.

As previously reported, the South Korean government has suspended flights to and from the UK since Dec. 23, requiring all arrivals from the UK to be quarantined for 14 days and to undergo another nucleic acid test at the end of the quarantine period. At the same time, the government increased the quarantine of people entering the country from South Africa, requiring them to be tested again at the end of the quarantine period.

Flights to and from the U.K. will be suspended from Dec. 23 to Dec. 31, the government said. Meanwhile, testing of people arriving in Korea from the UK will be stepped up: the quarantine exemption policy for staff of Korean diplomatic offices in the UK will be suspended; and all people arriving in Korea from the UK will be tested for the virus one more time after they finish their two-week quarantine.

What are the criteria for designating testing organizations by the Chinese Embassy and Consulates in Korea

The relevant testing organizations are all COVID-19 nucleic acid testing organizations designated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea, and the Embassy and Consulates screened them taking into consideration their geographic distribution, high and low fees, testing timeframe, and weekend services, among other criteria.

Can the test be done at hospitals other than those on the Embassy/Consulate's list of designated organizations

No. The format of the test certificates issued by the designated institutions have gone through an accreditation process and have been made available for verification by the airline companies. If the test is done at another institution, you may be denied boarding. In addition, the list of relevant institutions will be continuously updated, so please pay attention to the Embassy or Consulate's public number or website information.

Do non-commercial flights (return-to-work charter flights, etc.) also need to have a nucleic acid test done at a designated testing facility

Yes

About the test results, can you show a screenshot of a cell phone text message in lieu of a paper certificate

No, you cannot. Some hospitals issue cell phone text message results that do not contain key information such as name and ID and cannot be verified. Please be sure to provide a paper test certificate.

Does the nucleic acid test certificate have to be in English

Not necessarily. For direct flights from Korea to China, you can board the plane with either the Korean or English version of the test certificate. If you are transiting through a third country, it is recommended that you obtain an English version for local inspection. The Chinese Embassy and Consulates in Korea have designated a list of hospitals that can issue English certificates.
