For more than 1,611 years from the Western Jin Dynasty to the late Qing Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty, Zhongxiang was ruled by the counties, prefectures and governments of past dynasties. Because Emperor Jiajing was born and raised here, Yuci County was named "Zhongxiang", which means "auspicious and gathering together". In the 11th year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1531), the Imperial House inherited Tianfu, which was one of the three directly under the central government (Shuntianfu-now Beijing, Yingtianfu-now Nanjing, Chengtianfu-now Zhongxiang). It was once the political, economic and cultural center of Jianghan and Huguang. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the name of the county was still Zhongxiang, which was in the middle of Yongzheng. In May, 1992, the county was withdrawn to set up a city.

Zhongxiang Dialect

Zhongxiang Dialect belongs to the southwest area of the northern dialect area of China, and locally, it can be divided into Chengguan (that is, Yingzhong) accent, Lengshui accent, Dongqiao accent, Jiukou accent and Chaihu accent (note: Chaihu is a big immigrant town, and immigrants come from Xichuan, Henan, belonging to Henan dialect area). The Zhongxiang dialect spoken on this site will be dominated by the most representative Yingzhong accent.

Characteristics of modern Zhongxiang dialect:

1. Since 1981s, Mandarin has been widely infiltrated into Zhongxiang dialect, and the differences between Zhongxiang dialect and Mandarin are gradually narrowing. In 1936, China linguist Zhao Yuanren made an investigation in Zhongxiang, Hubei Province. At that time, the words "beat, thief, shake, stretch, criticize, ride, stand, choke, blind, cut, drop, drown, lose and meat" were all local pronunciations of Zhongxiang. In the late 1981s, linguists visited Zhongxiang again and found that the pronunciation of the above words was close to that of Mandarin. The pronunciation of many words has changed from dialect to Mandarin.

2. Zhongxiang dialect is not as sweet, bright, light, crisp, euphemistic and friendly as Beijing dialect, nor as delicate and delicate as Shanghai dialect. Although the accent is very similar to Sichuan dialect, it is not as cadenced as Sichuan dialect. Zhongxiang dialect is very simple and honest, with a flat tone and little ups and downs.

3. There are two unique and important auxiliary words "Da" and "Ba" in Zhongxiang dialect. The function of "da" is like "le" in Mandarin, indicating the perfect tense; "Ba" is not only equivalent to "Ma" in Mandarin in interrogative sentences, but also usually used in declarative sentences, such as "I know my hometown news very well, and I often go to the window of Zhongxiang."

4. Like Beijing dialect, Zhongxiang dialect also contains a large number of children's voices. Such as "today", "everything", "interesting work" (interesting), "Nahar" (there) and so on.

5. Zhongxiang dialect contains a very interesting vibrato /r/, which is mostly derived from the suffix "zi". For example, sheep, steamed stuffed bun, chair, car, old man, etc., words that almost end with "zi" are all vibrato in Zhongxiang dialect. The frequent occurrence of vibrato in Russian is a headache for many learners, but for students from Zhong Xiang, there is no difficulty at all.

6. Zhongxiang dialect generally does not distinguish between flat tongue and rolled tongue sounds, including N and L, Z and zh, C and ch, S and sh. This feature will encounter some obstacles when learning Japanese. In addition, there are no vowels in Zhongxiang dialect that correspond to eng, ing, ong and iong in Mandarin.
