The castle was built for military purposes, so it actually implies three fortifications.

The first fortification is the urn on the outermost edge of the castle and the rammed earth wall around the castle with a distance of 1,311m. There are two gates in the north and south of Zhangbi Castle. The north gate is made of brick, and the south gate is made of stone. The urn is built outside the north gate. On top of the urn, there are nearly ten temples corresponding to military implications, such as Guandi Temple.

The second fortification was cleverly set in the living area of the fort. A main road of Zhangbi Castle is called Dragon Street, which connects the north and south gates. Divide the castle into two halves. The wall on the frontage side of Longjie Street is taller than anywhere else. Every building facing the street in the castle will not open its gate on the main street, and all intersections are T-shaped, without crosses. The reason is that once the enemy breaks through the first line of defense and enters the fort, they can only detour on the main road. At this time, as long as the alley door is closed, every building on both sides of Longjie Street is called an independent fort in the castle. The third fortification is the underground fortification system, that is, the tunnel, which is also the most distinctive place of Zhangbi Castle. You need to enter from Guandi Temple on the right side of the entrance. The height of the tunnel is about 2 meters from the ground, the middle layer is 8-11 meters from the ground and the bottom layer is 17-21 meters from the ground. The tunnels are distributed in a three-layer three-dimensional network structure. There is a soil trough for feeding livestock on the high floor; There is an earth cave that can accommodate two or three people at intervals below the middle-level cave wall, which is an authentic sentry post and a cave for storing grain.
