The 128th plenary session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted on the afternoon of July 31 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to give Beijing the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. Beijing has become the "first city in Olympic history" to host both the Summer and Winter Games.

Beijing has hosted the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 7th National Games, the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, the 21st World University Games, the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2008 Beijing Paralympics, and the 2014 FINA Grand Prix in synchronized swimming. Beijing won the right to host the 24th Winter Olympic Games in 2022.In 2009, there were 6,149 stadiums*** in Beijing.
