The story is about Xu Wenqiang, a newcomer to Shanghai in the 1930s, a time of internal and external problems, the Chamber of Commerce, and the rise of patriotic nationalism, who inadvertently saves Feng Cheng Cheng, the daughter of Feng Jingyao, the top business tycoon of the Shanghai Bund, and befriends Ding Li, the slumlord of Zhabei, who has been a friend since then. The three of them started a complicated love story, but when Qiang found out that Feng Jingyao was in collusion with a Japanese husband, he secretly sabotaged Feng's plot. Feng Jingyao found out and ordered Qiang to be hunted down and killed. In the 1920s Shanghai Bund, the owner of the Lido Theater, Jin Dazhong, and a few thugs go to Feng Jingyao's pier to cause trouble. Meanwhile, Xu Wenqiang walks out of the station and meets Feng Cheng Cheng for the first time. The stubborn and beautiful Cheng Cheng reminds Xu Wenqiang of his former girlfriend, Fang Yan Yun. Nowadays, Yan Yun is the number one socialite on the Shanghai Bund and is having an affair with the tycoon Feng Jing Yao.

A gang of thugs collects protection money from the vendors, and Ding Li, a small stall owner, clenches his fists. Xu Wenqiang passes by and comes to his aid.

When Feng Jing Yao's daughter Cheng Cheng was kidnapped by Heng San and his gang on his birthday, Xu Wen Qiang and Ding Li rescued her. When Heng San set fire to Ding Li's house, Xu Wenqiang rescued Ding's mother, and Ding Li was so grateful that he and Xu Wenqiang became brothers.

Episode 2 Cheng Cheng and his girlfriend Wang Yueqi went to see Xu Wenqiang and Ding Li. When Xu Wenqiang is not there, Cheng Cheng is a bit lost. She thanks Ding Li with money, but Ding Li refuses. Wang Yueqi sees the signs and tells Cheng Cheng that Ding Li is in love with her.

Xu Wenqiang went to work as a porter at the pier with Ding Li. Meanwhile, he goes to Shikumen to look for Yan Yun at the address she left for him, but fails to find her. Ah Bing (Feng Jing Yao's henchman) is jittery because he betrayed Feng Jing Yao and helped Jin Dazhong. Ninth Uncle, the deputy chief inspector of the police station, reassures him to blame Li Wang Qi (Feng Jing Yao's henchman) when he says something. While unloading the goods, Xu Wenqiang accidentally drops one of the crates into the river. At this moment, a group of inspectors seized all the goods.

Bing reports the loss of the goods to Li Wangqi. Li Wangqi was furious that the missing goods were canned meat from the United States, but in fact they were a batch of arms. Meanwhile, the arms shipment has already reached Jin Dazhong, but one box is missing. Ding Li fishes out the wooden box that fell into the river, but unexpectedly found guns in the box, so he secretly took one.

Feng Jingyao, who knew about the missing shipment, guessed that the person who betrayed him was Ah Bing and instructed Uncle Xiang to look into the matter.

Episode 3 Xu Wenqiang finally meets Yan Yun and they have mixed feelings. Ding Li is trying to sell his gun, but he doesn't realize that the buyer is Jin Dazhong, and Ding Li lies that he is here to buy the gun. Jin Dazhong pretends to be helpless and lets him go, but instructs his men to quietly follow him home. Thanks to Ding's mother's paranoia earlier, she hid the gun and Kim Dae-jung's men returned without any success.

Li Wangqi begs Yan Yun to put in a good word for him in front of Feng Jing Yao because he lost his gun. Yan Yun agrees to help, but asks Li Wang Qi to promise Xu Wen Qiang to be the business manager of Mei Hua Theater.

Episode 4 Xu Wenqiang arrives at Mei Wah Theater and Li Wangqi introduces him to Ah Bing. Ah Bing immediately recognizes Hui Man Keung as the porter he met that night, and Hui Man Keung also recognizes Ah Bing. When people from the Lido Theater came to Mei Wah to cause trouble, Hui Man Keung resolved the matter beautifully and made friends with Chief Inspector Ma of the French Concession Inspectorate.

Lee Wang-ki wants Ninth Uncle to help him look into the missing box of guns. Uncle Nine secretly snickers because he was the one who arranged the gun robbery by Kim Dae-jung.

Worried that Xu Wenqiang would reveal that he was Feng Jingyao's traitor, Bing hired Ding Li to kill Xu Wenqiang. Ding Li was shocked when he realized that it was Xu Wenqiang who was killed when he fired the gun, but luckily no one was hurt. Ding Li finds Bing to return his commission, but he is knocked out by Bing's gun. Hui Wenqiang, who was quietly following him, was detected by Ah Bing. In a time of crisis, Ching Ching, who was secretly following Hui Wenqiang, went up to stall for time to let Hui Wenqiang leave, but was detected by Ah Bing. In a moment of desperation, Xu Wenqiang pulls Cheng Cheng to escape. Cheng Cheng is red-faced and intoxicated.......

Episode 5 In order to save Ding Li, Xu Wenqiang tells Li Wangqi that Ah Bing is a traitor and persuades him that his priority is to find the gun so that he can successfully hand over to Feng Jingyao. When Bing asks Ding Li about the whereabouts of his gun, Xu Wenqiang comes to his rescue and is also caught by Bing. Li Wang-ki's men arrive at the warehouse and rescue the two men. Uncle Xiang thinks highly of HUI Man-keung and asks TING Li to come to the theater to assist HUI Man-keung, which makes LI Wang-ki jealous. The people of the theater gradually become convinced of Hui Man Keung. Jin Dazhong has made an appointment with a Guangdong man to do business with this shipment of arms, but he didn't realize that Feng Jingyao has already sent a message to all the chambers of commerce that whoever dares to hit on the idea of this shipment of arms will be working against Feng Jingyao.

Episode 6: Meihua Cinema steals all the business from the Lido, so Jin Dazhong steals the copy of Meihua Cinema's screening that night. When Xu Wenqiang is "invited" to the Lido, Jin Dazhong tells Xu Wenqiang that he only robbed the prints to ask him to contact Feng Jingyao for a meeting and return his gun to Feng Jingyao. Episode 7 Chief Inspector Ma searches the Lido for guns and arrests Jin Dazhong. Feng Jing Yao invites Xu Wen Qiang and Ding Li to dinner. Through the conversation at the banquet, Feng Jingyao is impressed by Xu Wenqiang. Cheng Cheng was recruited by the Long Beach Daily and was hired for her excellent writing skills.

Du Pont, the French director of the Bureau of Public Works, hosts a banquet for Feng Jing Yao. Dupont is developing properties in the Huibei area. A man named Chen Lianshan refuses to move his yarn factory out of the area, and he wants Feng Jingyao's help in removing this nail household. Feng Jingyao had long coveted the Chinese director of the Ministry of Industry, so he took the opportunity to ask Du Pont to help him by proposing to run for the post of Chinese director. Cheng Cheng thinks about Xu Wenqiang all day long and is ridiculed by her companions, but she doesn't realize that she really meets her beloved unexpectedly at the church. Cheng Cheng visits the orphans at the church and meets Xu Wenqiang again, learning that he is a volunteer at the orphanage, and their relationship grows stronger.

Episode 11: Ding Li Takes Charge of the Lido Theater and Opens a Small Casino, which upsets Hui Man Keung. Wang Yueqi pretends to be celebrating her birthday with the intention of setting up a match between Feng and Xu. However, HUI Man Keung leaves CHING behind and rushes back to the theater to arrange for the release of his new movie. Feng Jing Yao brings Yan Yun to meet Du Bang. Episode 12 Ninth Uncle has been trying to find a chance to take revenge on Feng Jing Yao since his unsuccessful gun robbery. Dupont plays the zither in front of Yan Yun's house and confesses his love. When Yan Yun ignores him, Du Bang asks Feng Jing Yao to help him create an opportunity. Feng Jing Yao tells Yan Yun to be perfunctory to Du Bang, which makes Yan Yun feel that she is just a pawn in the man's business world.

Episode 13 Xu Wenqiang listens to Yan Yun pouring out her sorrows and Yan Yun forgets to hug Xu Wenqiang. This scene was seen by Cheng Cheng who came to deliver chicken soup and felt lost. Cheng Cheng and Xu Wenqiang meet again at the church. Seeing Cheng Cheng's sincere and holy look as she leads the choir children in singing, Xu Wenqiang can't help but be attracted.

Jin Dazhong is repeatedly beaten up by his fellow inmates. In order to take advantage of Jin Dazhong, Ninth Uncle promises to release him in three days. Uncle Nine finds Du Pang and uses the deed to the Chen family's yarn factory as bait to get Du Pang to step in and bail Jin Dazhong out of jail.

Episode 14 Chen Hanlin is used by Ninth Uncle and joins the police force, unknowingly he is grateful to Ninth Uncle instead. Wang Yueqi finds Cheng Cheng and hopes that she will consider accepting Chen Hanlin and not be so cruel even if she has to reject him. Feng Jing Yao orders Uncle Xiang to keep an eye on Du Pang, and Uncle Nine informs Jin Dazhong to prepare to start their plan.

Yan Yun is y in love with Xu Wen Qiang, but when she learns that he likes Cheng Cheng, she is momentarily hurt and drinks with Xu Wen Qiang. Xu Wenqiang forgets that he has a date with Cheng Cheng.

Episode 15: Cheng Cheng is kidnapped by Jin Dazhong while waiting for Xu Wenqiang. Xu Wenqiang, who is late to the party, regrets it. Xu Wenqiang is y puzzled by the leakage of today's appointment time. Chen Hanlin omits to say that he knows the time and has told Ninth Uncle, Xu Wenqiang suspects Ninth Uncle. Jin Dazhong goes to the theater behind Ninth Uncle's back and asks Xu Wenqiang to bet on a game. Ninth Uncle rushes to Feng Jing Yao to find out the truth and says that it is all because of Du Pang, hoping that Feng Jing Yao can hand over the land deed. When Jin Dazhong and Ding Li fight, Ninth Uncle arrives and pretends to be impartial and takes them back to the police station together.

Episode 16 Du Pang finally waits for Feng Jing Yao's call, thinking that the land deed will be delivered by Feng Jing Yao voluntarily as Uncle Nine said. Xu Wenqiang finds Feng Jingyao and says he will do his best to save Cheng Cheng. He admired Feng Jing Yao for his responsibility and courage. Xu Wenqiang finds Ninth Uncle and they agree to exchange the land deed for Cheng Cheng the next day. Ninth Uncle ordered his men to arrest Ding's mother to make sure everything was in order. At the pier, Xu Wenqiang arrived with the land deed as promised. Ninth Uncle arrived with his men and aimed his gun at Ching Ching. Uncle Xiang also arrived with his men and aimed his gun at Jin Dazhong. Jin Dazhong pushes Ding's mother out. Xu Wenqiang decides to exchange his life for Ding's safety. Xu Wenqiang and Cheng Cheng were taken to a secret warehouse by Jin Dazhong he hid the land deed and then stayed in the warehouse to wait for rescue.

Episode 17 Feng Jing Yao asked Uncle Xiang to put the word out that the land deed would be auctioned on a later date to force Du Bang out first. Dupont is furious and takes the initiative to meet Feng Jingyao. On the other hand, Chen Hanlin ventures out to find out where Cheng Cheng is being held. Xu Wenqiang, who is in deep trouble, and Cheng Cheng's relationship further deepens. Chen Hanlin tells Ding Li about Cheng Cheng's whereabouts. Ding Li rushes to the warehouse with his men and rescues Xu Wenqiang and Cheng Cheng. But in the confusion, Ding Li, Xu Wenqiang and Cheng Cheng were separated.

Episode 18 Feng Jing Yao waits for Uncle Xiang to inform that he has successfully rescued the young lady and then shows his cards to Du Pang that the land deed is on Xu Wen Qiang. Uncle Nine tells Du Pang that as long as he sends someone to find Xu Wenqiang, there is still hope for everything. Ching Ching is worried about Hui Man Keung's life and death, and Feng Jing Yao agrees to solve the problem. Uncle Nine seized the Lido for assaulting the police and trafficking opium and returned it to Jin Dazhong for operation. Xu Wenqiang calls Cheng Cheng to report that he is safe, but when the call is answered, he spots Jin Dazhong and has to hang up the phone and leave in a hurry.

Episode 19 Ding Li and Xu Wenqiang are hiding in some warehouse by the river. Ding Li tries to find Feng Jing Yao to help them, but Xu Wen Qiang is adamant that he won't do it because he is ready to give up his relationship with Cheng Cheng and leave Shanghai. Jin Dazhong finds the warehouse and Ding's mother is shot. Ding Li goes to take revenge on Du Pang and is held at gunpoint by Ninth Uncle. Xu Wenqiang shows up just in time and the two sides confront each other. During the melee, Ding Li was shot in the leg. Fortunately, Uncle Xiang arrived and saved them. When they arrive at Feng's house, Ding's mother also arrives safely, and Ding Li is doubly grateful to Feng Jing Yao.

Episode 20: Ding Li Formally Worshipped by Feng Jing Yao. But Xu Wenqiang wants to leave Shanghai and go to Guangzhou, Cheng Cheng is saddened. The photo of Du Pang fooling around with Yan Yun made the headline of the French newspaper and Du Pang's father-in-law ordered him to return to China immediately.
