I. Food Safety and Corporate Social Responsibility
1. Food safety is facing a crisis of trust
(1) Lean Meat Extract Incident: In 2011, CCTV aired a special program called "The Truth of the "Healthy Pigs"" on the Consumer Rights and Interests Day of March 15, which disclosed the use of lean pork by the Jiyuan Shuanghui Company in Henan Province. In 2011, CCTV aired a special program called "The Truth About "Healthy Pigs"" on Consumer Rights Day, which revealed the fact that Henan Jiyuan Shuanghui Company used lean pork. Shuanghui, as a famous meat processing food company, in the process of pursuing economic interests, disregarded national laws and regulations and the safety of people's lives, and used lean pork as raw materials, whose behavior exposed the lack of corporate social responsibility.
(2) Data analysis of complaints received by national consumer association organizations. Recently, China Consumers' Association (CCA) released a set of complaint acceptance data on its official website. The data shows that in 2011, the national consumer association organization **** accepted 39,082 complaints about various types of food, 34,789 in 2010, an increase of 12.3%, of which two-thirds of the complaints are related to the quality of the quality of the complaints amounted to 24,860 complaints, the safety of the complaints reached 1,362 cases.
(3) China's top ten issues of corporate social responsibility. According to the Academy of Social Sciences information released, China's top ten issues of corporate social responsibility in the next three years (public selection) the top five are water crisis, insufficient freshwater resources, serious pollution; pollution problems, air pollution, urban noise and garbage pollution, pesticides and fertilizers pollution; food safety issues, consumer health is affected; land degradation, insufficient arable area, food security is a hidden danger; housing prices are too high, affecting the market order and people's lives. The food safety problem has been ranked third, which reflects the seriousness of the food safety problem from the side. With the development of society and the progress of science and technology, people's concern for food has changed from quantity to the level of quality and safety, and food safety has thus become the focus of social attention.
2. Definition and actual status of CSR
(1) Definition of CSR. Since the 1970s, foreign scholars have explored a lot of the theory of corporate social responsibility, and there has been a relatively intense debate on whether enterprises should assume social responsibility. Until the 1980s, the business community and the theoretical community reached a consensus **** knowledge that enterprises should assume social responsibility. On the definition of corporate social responsibility, the more famous are: corporate social responsibility hierarchy and domain model, corporate citizenship theory and stakeholder theory.
Carroll proposed the famous four-level theory (economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic) in 1979, and in 2003 he and Schwartz used Venn diagrams for illustration to propose a new three-domain model of CSR. The three domains are economic, legal, and ethical, with the economic domain being "those activities that are intended to have a direct or indirect positive economic impact on the enterprise", the legal domain being "the response of a business enterprise to legal norms reflecting the will of the rulers of the society", and the ethical domain referring to "the general public and the community as a whole". The legal domain is "the response of business enterprises to legal norms that reflect the will of society's rulers", and the ethical domain refers to "the ethical responsibilities of business as expected by the general public and stakeholders".
(2) The actual situation of CSR in China. Compared with foreign countries, China's CSR has a late start, and Article 5 of the Company Law of 2006 explicitly introduces the concept of corporate social responsibility, that is, "In engaging in business activities, a company must abide by laws and regulations, comply with social morality and business ethics, be honest and trustworthy, accept the supervision of the government and the public, and assume social responsibility." The current situation is that China's corporate social responsibility (CSR) is not a major issue in China. The current situation shows that there is still a big gap between China's CSR and foreign developed countries. Take a questionnaire survey held by the Competitiveness Research Center of China Business Newspaper as an example, "The questionnaire involves the issue of CSR: 'What do you think about the status of enterprises' fulfillment of social responsibility under the current market environment?' The question*** was answered by 975 people, and the results showed that 947 of them, or 97% of the total sample, thought that the status of enterprises' fulfillment of social responsibility was 'not very good' or 'very bad'. Only 3% said it was very good, while 36% answered 'very poor', 12 times more than the former." From these statistics, it is clear that there is indeed a big gap between CSR in China and the ideal state, and the sense of social responsibility is still weak. Idea is the forerunner of action, corporate social responsibility awareness is not strong, and how from the action and practice to those who originally should bear the responsibility to really put into practice?
"In real life, some enterprises, including well-known enterprises in the pursuit of interests in the process, disregard for the lives of the people and the country's laws, disciplinary violations, counterfeiting and selling of counterfeit products, in order to save costs by adding a variety of cheap hazardous substances, which led to a series of safety accidents, which revealed a serious lack of corporate social responsibility. In fact, enterprises and society are closely linked, it is impossible to leave society and survive and develop alone." If an enterprise can balance the relationship between long-term and short-term interests, personal self-interest and social welfare, and assume responsibility for all stakeholders, then the economy, society and its other forces will in turn become the force that supports its continued development and growth.
3, the consequences of the lack of corporate social responsibility
The lack of corporate social responsibility will cause a series of adverse consequences. First of all, the enterprise to substandard, fake, add harmful substances, there is a serious threat to the safety of consumers' lives. Secondly, the enterprise product is the representative of the enterprise image, the enterprise social responsibility is not strong, focus on immediate interests, the production of substandard food, in the long run, is not conducive to the reputation of the enterprise and the overall coordinated development. Again, food safety accidents, once occurred, may cause consumer distrust of the entire industry, the Fuyang milk powder, for example, this accident has triggered a crisis of consumer trust in the dairy industry as a whole and boycott crisis, easy to leave lingering scars on consumers.
Second, the rethinking of corporate social responsibility - the reasons for the lack of responsibility analysis
First, the enterprise is driven by profit, and thus put the interests of the first, do not pay attention to the safety of food. The world is all about profit; the world is all about profit. Profit maximization is the fundamental and key to business survival. As the old saying goes, "where the profit is, although a thousand-foot mountain, nothing more; under the abyss, nothing." In front of the interest, some enterprises and company executives rush to the head, lack of long-term vision, in the game with consumers choose the short-term interests, so that out of the wrong step. The result can be imagined, this zero-sum game with consumers will only have a hundred harm rather than one benefit, both the damage to the interests of consumers, its disregard for the state's laws and policies of the authority of the practice will make the image of the enterprise damage, is likely to send the development of the enterprise's future, so that the enterprise towards the decline.
Secondly, in terms of food safety, China's weak sense of corporate social responsibility is also related to the lack of an early warning mechanism for food safety risks. The State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) proposed in 2006 to gradually establish a comprehensive food safety early warning system, which is compared with the developed countries, in the past few years, China's food safety risk analysis and pre-emptive measures are still quite weak. In Europe and the United States and other developed countries, the risk of early warning mechanism has become the most important part of food safety management.
