Handan's history can be traced back to the Shang Dynasty more than 2,500 years ago, which makes Handan one of the earliest cities to be formed in North China. Handan is located in the southern tip of Hebei Province, at the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains, between latitude 36°20′~36°44′ north and longitude 114°03′~114°40′ east.
