Qu Yuan was a native of Chu during the Warring States Period. At the age of 22, he was already a formal disciple and a Class 3 doctor, assisting Chu Huaiwang. At that time, Chu Huaiwang was exiled by treacherous court officials and did not accept Qu Yuan's idea of uniting against Qin. He was lured by lobbyist Zhang Yi into house arrest and forced to cede territory to the city. Later, he became ill because of anxiety and soon died in the state of Qin.
Qu Yuan was heartbroken when he learned that, and wrote a letter asking King Xiang of Qin to avenge King Huai. However, Xiang Wang liked treacherous people very much. He exiled Qu Yuan to the south of the Yangtze River. Later, the State of Chu was captured by the State of Qin and was in danger. Qu Yuan's desire to save the country was shattered. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 278 BC (when Qu Yuan was sixty-two), he plunged into the choppy Miluo River with great sadness and grief.
When the Chu people heard the news, they rowed after him, but when they arrived at Dongting Lake, Qu Yuan was no longer there. This has become the beginning of the dragon boat race on this day every year. Since then, people have thrown rice into the river at this time every year as a sacrifice to him. But because the rice sacrificed to Qu Yuan was eaten by the dragon on the river, people later wrapped the rice dumplings with leaves of rice dumplings, reed leaves and colorful silk. From generation to generation, it evolved into the custom of eating palm seed on the Dragon Boat Festival.
