Zhang Jinliang was born in Liyuan family, and his ancestral home was in Beijing. His father has performed on the same stage with famous predecessors such as Mei Lanfang and Cheng for many years. When Zhang Jinliang was a child, he gradually fell in love with the art of Peking Opera. 1930, Zhang Jinliang was admitted to Peking China Advanced Theatre Academy. He started out as a clown, but because of his good understanding and quick learning, he soon became the high flyers of drama school. Zhang Jinliang is known as one of the "Four Little King Kong" of China Theatre Academy, and won the first place in Beijing Tongling Competition for Joker.

After graduation, Zhang Jinliang stayed as a teaching assistant, teaching during the day and performing at night. 1937 after the lugouqiao incident, the drama school was dissolved, and Zhang Jinliang took classes everywhere (participated in the acting of the troupe), and almost traveled all over the provinces of the motherland and tasted the ups and downs of life. The experience of that narrow escape made him unforgettable. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression period, Zhang Jinliang went to the South to perform by boat. Unexpectedly, he boarded the passenger ship used by the Japanese invaders to smuggle ammunition. When the ship was about to dock in Wuhan, several Kuomintang fighters suddenly roared and dropped several bombs. Zhang Jinliang was lucky to survive because the bomb didn't hit the spaceship.

1947, Zhang Jinliang went to the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia to perform with Ping Jin Peking Opera Troupe, and later became the first batch of actors of China Opera Academy. 1953 seconded to Shandong Peking Opera Troupe. During the Cultural Revolution, Zhang Jinliang suffered a lot, and his identity changed from an artist to a "cultural traitor" and a "big spy". He wore a sign around his neck and was paraded and criticized all day. One day, he couldn't bear it any longer. Later, Zhang Jinliang gave up this plan, because he didn't want to take the essence of China art he had worked so hard to inherit to his grave silently. 1978, his old friend in Beijing visited Zhang Jinliang and invited him back to Beijing to teach at China Theatre Academy. 1982, Zhang Lao was invited back to Shandong to teach at the provincial opera school. At the invitation of Shandong University, CCTV and Beijing People's Broadcasting Station, Mr. Zhang Lao gave a lecture on the performing arts of Peking Opera clowns.

Despite several ups and downs for decades, Zhang Jinliang has never stopped pursuing the art of Peking Opera. At the climax of the play, an audience thinks that Zhang Jinliang is a cruel mother-in-law and angrily throws a teapot at Zhang Jinliang. After War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression's performance, he performed the whole "Yu Tang Chun" in Beijing Chang 'an Theatre. Halfway through the play, a Kuomintang officer who knew the lyrics pulled out a pistol from his waist, climbed onto the stage and fought fiercely with Zhang Jinliang. He quickly hid in the background. In 1960s, Zhang Jinliang's role as an American consultant in Indiana Jones left a deep impression on people. When Premier Zhou met him, he said humorously, "Hello, Mr. American Consultant."

When Zhang Jinliang was a child, he often went to the theatre with his father. He was fascinated by the way the old gentlemen scratched their faces backstage. When I was a teenager, I began to study and ponder the art of Facebook, and I got the true biography of my predecessors such as Ma Fulu. He has devoted himself to this research for 60 years. Zhang Jinliang's facial makeup, techniques and coloring are different, which not only respects the traditional music handed down by predecessors, but also breaks through the stereotypes of predecessors, and integrates the coloring techniques of western painting with those of Chinese painting to create a unique facial makeup school.

In order to save the traditional art of facial makeup, Zhang Jinliang, who is over eighty years old, has compiled more than 2,000 kinds of facial makeup that he has carefully drawn over the years, including hundreds of facial makeup of The Journey to the West, The Legend of the Water Margin, The Legend of the White Snake, The List of Gods, Shi Gong 'an, The Picture of a Hundred Ugly Faces and various lost classic facial makeup spectra, as well as Sichuan Opera, Kunqu Opera and Han Opera.
