The origin of Cantonese
Cantonese, commonly known as Cantonese, with its proper name "Cantonese Dialect", is one of the seven major dialects in Chinese. The language phenomenon is complicated, there are many archaic words, and the internal differences are small. It is distributed in most parts of Guangdong and southeastern Guangxi, represented by Guangzhou dialect.

According to the research of Xing Gongwan, a famous modern linguist, as early as the Yao and Shun period, there was a "down-linguistization" movement centered on the Central Plains in the Yellow River Basin. At that time, tribes and nations formed an alliance to jointly elect leaders and govern the world. During the cooperation, a common language for communication is very important. In the Western Zhou Dynasty, the dialect of Qin Jin, the birthplace of Xia dialect, was used as the standard pronunciation, and "Ya Yan" was formed. "Elegant language" became the national lingua franca in the Central Plains in the Zhou Dynasty. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, although the dialects of various vassal States were different, they all used elegant words in official exchanges, scholars' lectures and sacrificial activities. Confucius once said: "Confucius speaks politely, and poetry and calligraphy are polite." After the southern expedition of the Qin Dynasty, fugitives from the original six countries were recruited, waiting to recover Lingnan. These people come from all corners of the country, and they have to communicate with each other in polite language. Because they settled in the fields alone, the language did not spread throughout Lingnan.

Before the Qin Dynasty, Guangdong was called Na Man. This is the place where Baiyue people live. "Baiyue" is a Chinese transliteration, also written as "Baiyue", which is the self-name of ancient southern aborigines. Baiyue also knows Baiyue, so Cantonese is also called Cantonese.

Therefore, although Cantonese is named after "Yue", it was also brought by Han immigrants from the Central Plains. However, it is undeniable that some sounds and words in ancient Chinese have been lost in today's Central Plains, but they are well preserved in Cantonese.
