Flying over Luding Bridge is an important battle with historical significance on the way of the Long March of the Chinese Workers and Peasants Red Army.
It happened on May 29th. 1935. The Central Red Army successfully crossed the Dadu River in central and western Sichuan and went north along the east bank of the Dadu River. The main force comes from Anshun field on the west bank of Dadu River. The soldiers of the Red Fourth Regiment braved the heavy rain and marched on the rugged and steep mountain road, attacking about 240 miles day and night, and arrived at the west bank of Luding Bridge in the early morning of May 29th.
Before the Red Army arrived at the Luding Bridge, the enemy had removed the 80-meter-long slab of the Luding Bridge at 100 meters, leaving only 13 iron cables across the Dadu River. After careful study, the Red Fourth Regiment decided to deploy 22 party member and activists from the Second Company to form the Bridge Commando.
Zhao, the striker of the second strike, proudly said: "There is no difficulty that workers can't overcome, and there is no bridge that revolutionaries can't cross." His words even awakened all his comrades-in-arms, who went through fire and water, went forward without hesitation.
At four o'clock in the afternoon, 22 commandos braved the bullets and marched step by step from the bare iron rope to the East Bridge. If they step on the air or get hit, they will fall into the river and be swallowed up by huge waves.
The commandos in front used pots, washbasins and thick wooden blocks as shields to resist bullets and crawled slowly on the shaking iron rope. Soldiers outside the commandos are also stepping up fire to cover them crossing the bridge. Halfway there, the enemy's firepower became more and more fierce. Unfortunately, three comrades-in-arms sacrificed in turn, fell into the river and gave their precious lives. After two hours of heroic fighting, we finally defeated the enemy and occupied the bridge.
The victory of Luding Bridge this time allowed the main force of the Red Army to cross the natural barrier Dadu River and saved the Red Army and the revolution at a critical juncture. Completely shattered Chiang Kai-shek's attempt to annihilate the Red Army south of Dadu River.
The oil painting "Capture Luding Bridge" reflects the fearless revolutionary spirit of the Red Army soldiers who are not afraid of bloodshed and sacrifice. Forever fixed on the roaring Dadu River, embedded in the revolutionary history of China, let every China people deeply miss and admire!
