Arctium lappa is similar to Lepidoptera Noctuidae in size, but its body color is bright, usually red or yellow with many stripes or spots. Adult antennae are filiform or pinnate. The front wings M2 and M3 are close to Cu and seem to be separated from the lower corner of the inner chamber. The posterior wing Sc ten Rl and Rs merge from the base, and then separate again until the middle or outside of the medial chamber. Adults have phototaxis and are mostly active at night.
There are more than 6,000 species known in undergraduate course, and Hyphantria cunea (Drury) is a famous quarantine pest. There are red-edged moths, dust-polluted moths and striped moths in China.
