Introduction of barbecue culture in Hong Kong
Refers to the barbecue style of Hong Kong people, which originated from the collective travel of factory workers in the 1960s. At that time, the tour group would go to the New Territories for an outing. In addition to food, they would also bring pots and pans to handle the food after arrival. Barbecue is a favorite outdoor activity of Hong Kong people, and it can also be used to show friendship. Most Hong Kong people gather around a barbecue and cook their own food with barbecued pork. Hong Kong-style barbecue food is mainly meat, such as chicken wings, steak, chicken chops, pork chops, lamb chops, etc., and these meats are usually marinated in advance with seasonings such as black pepper, garlic, citronella and sand tea. Common barbecue foods include sausages, beef balls, fish balls, tribute balls, and sometimes seafood, such as spring fish or squid. Due to the shortage of barbecue grills, some popular barbecue spots have privately operated barbecue shops to rent barbecue grills. It first appeared in the barbecue paradise located in the former site of Dawei Happy City (now the former site of MTR Dawei Station), and later such "self-help barbecue" shops began to appear in tourist hotspots such as Repulse Bay. Usually, these self-service barbecue shops will increase their fees and limit their use time on holidays because of supply and demand problems. The barbecue grill is similar to the American barbecue grill, but the barbecue method is roughly the same as the stone barbecue grill. Some buildings will also have iron fences on the roofs for residents to use. In addition to urban development, these self-service barbecue shops are gradually moving away from the urban areas. At present, most barbecue parks in Hong Kong are located in the northern New Territories, such as Siu Lam, Tai Lam, Lung Kwu Tan, Yuen Long and Tai Wai Tuk, far from the urban areas. Most of these places charge a fixed fee and have parking lots where customers can drive. The venue is for customers to eat barbecue food at will, and some even provide additional entertainment facilities, such as live football and sparrows on TV.
