Good drainage, Paeonia lactiflora likes cool climate, suitable for cultivation in temperate to subtropical areas of China, with the characteristics of spring germination and autumn rooting, summer. In the hot season, plants are semi-dormant, preferring fertile and loose sandy loam with good drainage and avoiding saline-alkali land. Because peony is a fleshy root, it is drought-tolerant but afraid of water accumulation. For example, water accumulation in soil can easily rot the fleshy roots of Paeonia lactiflora, so it is not suitable for planting in low-lying land and saline-alkali land.
Therefore, it is advisable to plant in a cool and sunny place to avoid watering the potted plants too much. During the whole dormant period from winter to early spring, the soil should be kept moist and not too dry, but the drainage should be smooth to avoid water accumulation, otherwise the underground roots will rot and die easily.
