What is the use of nutritional reference values on food packaging?
Nutrient reference values (NRV) refers to "nutrient reference values of Chinese food label", which is a reference standard for comparing the nutritional components of food and a nutritional reference scale for consumers to choose food. Nutrient reference values is mainly based on recommended intake (RNI) and appropriate intake (AI) of dietary nutrients for China residents.

The problem of undernutrition or overnutrition of China residents, especially the excessive intake of fat, sodium (salt) and cholesterol, is the main cause of chronic diseases. An unbalanced diet is an important cause of chronic diseases. For example, a high-fat diet can lead to obesity and dyslipidemia. Eating too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure.

Therefore, keeping the intake of dietary nutrients within a reasonable range, that is, designing our diet according to nutrient reference values, is helpful to prevent nutrient reference values of chronic diseases. The abbreviation NRV is commonly used on packaging bags, which is a standard specially used for food labeling.

It is based on the recommended daily energy intake of 2,000 kilocalories (8,400 kilojoules) for adults to calculate the relevant nutritional components of prepackaged foods.

The original text of the notice of the Ministry of Health on printing and distributing the Regulations on the Management of Food Nutrition Labeling is: "Guide and standardize the labeling of food nutrition labels, guide consumers to choose foods reasonably, promote the balance of dietary nutrition, and protect consumers' right to know and health".
