Why is Xinjiekou the first business district in Asia?
Because the Republic of China was the transportation, finance and business center of Nanjing.

Xinjiekou is located in the central area of Nanjing. 1929 (Republic of China 18), the national government began to build Nanjing as the capital according to the capital planning, and Xinjiekou was planned as a commercial area for the first time.

From the Republic of China 16 (1927) to the Republic of China's 26 (1937), the capital construction of "golden decade" completely changed the face of Xinjiekou. At that time, the Capital Construction Committee of the National Government decided to widen and transform Xinjiekou, and planned Xinjiekou as a commercial area for the first time.

In the next seven years of "capital construction", Zhongshan East Road, Zhongzheng Road (changed to Zhongshan South Road after liberation), Hanzhong Road and Zhongshan Road met at Xinjiekou, forming a circular square in the middle with a sculpture of Sun Yat-sen in the middle, which became the transportation hub of Nanjing as a whole.

The convenient traffic environment has brought many businesses and enterprises, and Xinjiekou has quickly formed a new commercial center. In the same year, China National Bank, Zhejiang Industrial Bank, Bank of Communications, Central Shopping Mall, Dahua Theatre, Xindu Theatre, Fuchang Hotel and other facilities were built.

During the period of 1949, on the eve of Nanjing's liberation, Xinjiekou area has become the transportation, finance and business center of Nanjing, with Bank of Communications, China Domestic Products Bank, Continental Bank, Zhejiang Industrial Bank and Juxingcheng Bank as banking areas, becoming the "Wall Street" of China.

Fuchang Hotel, Dasanyuan Restaurant, Tongqinglou Restaurant, Sanliujiu Restaurant and other restaurants, central shopping malls, Li Shunchang clothing stores and other shops gathered.

In addition, influential newspapers such as Central Daily, Bao Chao, Xinmin Daily and Rotary Daily, as well as entertainment venues such as Dahua Grand Theatre, Xindu Grand Theatre, World Grand Theatre and Central Grand Stage also gathered here, and Xinjiekou became the capital core of Nanjing at that time.

Existing buildings:

There are only four buildings left in Xinjiekou during the Republic of China, namely National Loan Bank, Zhejiang Industrial Bank, National Loan Bank and Central News Agency Building.

Located at Zhongshan Road 19, the "National Loan Bank" in the former Republic of China has now become the seat of Nanjing Postal Savings Bank.

Bank of Communications Nanjing Branch, located atNo. Zhongshan East Road 1, is now the location of the business department of China Industrial and Commercial Bank Jiangsu Branch, and the predecessor of China Bank Nanjing Branch (No.3 Zhongshan East Road) next door is Zhejiang Industrial Bank.

Now these buildings have been listed as cultural relics protection units in Nanjing. However, Nanjing Postal Savings and Remittance Bureau and Nanjing Salt Bank failed to survive in the former Republic of China.
