In my mind, this book - Ziyu's first book written and published on her own - has long been a "classic" because among the many books on food, it is different. In my mind, this book - and Ziyu's first book - has long been a "classic", because among the many books about food, it does stand out: it's not a cookbook (although there are a few recipes listed), it's not a novel (although the term "Remembrance of Things Past" reminds me of Proust), and it's not an autobiography (although there is a bit of autobiography in there somewhere), it's a collection of personal essays, which is quite unique. Rereading this book also brings me sweet memories.
The first edition of this book was published in Taiwan as A Fine Taste of Life. In 2003, the simplified Chinese version came out in mainland China (Guangxi Normal University Press), and the response was not bad. I remember that shortly after its publication, we were wandering the streets of Taipei, and in Yongkang Street we saw two fashionable young women walking toward us with smiles on their faces, both of them staring at Yu Ying and not letting go of her, and when they came to us, one of them blurted out, "Aren't you Ying Niang? We've just finished reading 'Living a normal life' and 'A fine taste of life' written by you, it's so wonderful,......
