The Moldovans are of the same origin as the Romanians and are descendants of the Dacians.
In the 13th and 14th centuries, when the Mongol Tatars and Hungarians invaded, the Dacians were gradually divided into three branches: the Moldovans, the Wallachians and the Transylvanians. The name of the ancient state of Moldova was the Dacian-Turacan State, and it went on to form the triad of Romania, Moldova, and Transylvania.
In 1359 Bogdan I created an independent feudal principality.
After 1487 it fell into vassalage to the Ottoman Empire.
The three principalities of Moldova, Wallachia and Transylvania were briefly united from 1600 to 1601.
Russia added the territory of Moldova (Bessarabia) to its territory in 1812.
In January 1859 Moldova and Wallachia were united and called Romania.
In 1878 Bisarabia was again attached to Russia.
Moldova declared independence in January 1918 and merged with Romania in March.
In June 1940 the USSR included Bessarabia in its territory again and merged most of Bessarabia's territory with the Moldavian Autonomous **** and State on the left bank of the Dniester River to form the Moldavian Soviet Socialist **** and State, which became one of the 15 Soviet Union Union's Union **** and States, with parts of the southern and northern part of Bessarabia being included in Ukraine.
Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, with Romania as a German ally. Germany transferred Bisarabia to Romania.
In September 1944, the Soviet-Romanian Armistice Agreement provided for the restoration of the 1940 Soviet-Romanian border.
In June 1990 the name was changed to "Moldovan Soviet Socialist **** and State".
On May 23, 1991 the name was changed to "Moldova*** and State".
On August 27, 1991 the Moldovan **** and State declared independence.
In March 1994, a referendum overwhelmingly voted in favor of maintaining the status of an independent state and against reunification with Romania.
In July 2009, Moldova made European integration a top priority, and the country's political, diplomatic, economic and cultural spheres were advanced around this goal.
In November 2013, Moldova initialed an associated countries agreement with the EU that included a deep and broad free trade agreement.
In June 2014, the associated countries agreement was officially signed.
