Can loquat seeds be eaten? How to eat?

Loquat seeds, also known as loquat cores, are slightly poisonous and should not be eaten raw.

When the loquat core is eaten raw, the cyanogenic glycoside will be hydrolyzed by saliva when chewed, releasing the highly toxic substance hydrocyanic acid. Hydrocyanic acid is a poison and can easily cause poisoning. After being absorbed, hydrocyanic acid combines with iron-containing respiratory enzymes in tissue cells, causing hypoxia, which in turn impairs the functions of the respiratory and vasomotor centers. In severe cases, it may even cause respiratory paralysis and death.

However, loquat cores contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can be used as medicine. They are bitter and neutral in nature, and enter the lung and stomach meridians.

It is used to treat lung heat and cough, persistent cough, dry throat, thirst, and insufficient stomach Qi. Take 9 to 15 grams of loquat core, mash it, add 3 slices of ginger, and decoct in water. Remove the residue and take it warmly, once in the morning and once in the evening. Effectiveness will be seen within 3 days. If used externally to treat scrofula, grind loquat kernels into powder and mix with vinegar for external application, which can reduce swelling and dissipate knots.

Just take the loquat core as medicine and do not overdose. Excessive oral administration can lead to poisoning and even death.
