The origin of the twenty-four solar terms and the winter solstice
The winter solstice festival originated in the Han Dynasty, flourished in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and is still used today. "Qing Jia Lu" even said that "the winter solstice is as big as the new year", which shows that the ancients attached great importance to the winter solstice. People believe that the winter solstice is the natural transformation of yin and yang and is a blessing from God. In the Han Dynasty, the Winter Solstice was regarded as the "Winter Festival", and the government would hold a congratulatory ceremony called "Hedong" and have a routine holiday.
The winter solstice is the earliest one to be formulated among the 24 solar terms. It was a solar term determined in ancient times based on the astronomical phenomena and phenology to determine that the Yang Qi gradually began to rise. On the winter solstice, the sun moves to 270° of ecliptic longitude (winter solstice point), and the position where the sun shines directly on the ground reaches the southernmost point of the year. The sun almost directly shines on the Tropic of Capricorn (also known as the winter solstice line), and the sun is most tilted towards the northern hemisphere.
