What are the key points for caring for cannas?

(1) Soil and fertilization

It has strong adaptability and grows best on fertile and sandy loam soil. When potting, you can mix leaf mold soil with an equal amount of garden soil, and add a small amount of compound fertilizer, bone meal, and bean cake. The flower pots should be deep and large, choose dwarf varieties, and plant 1 to 2 plants in each pot; generally apply sufficient base fertilizer before planting, top-dress once after 4 leaves appear, and top-dress nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium compound liquid fertilizer every half month; Stop fertilizing before flowering, and then top-dress with pruning after flowering.

(2) Moisture

Afraid of both drought and humidity. It is advisable to keep potted plants moist during the growth period without water accumulation. During the dormant period, the pot soil should be drier. Control watering after October. No watering is allowed 1 week before root digging to allow the soil to loosen and dry.

(3) Light and temperature

Like warmth and sunshine, but are afraid of cold. The growth and flowering temperature is 15-30℃, and the minimum growth temperature is 10℃. The leaves will turn black and wither when exposed to frost, and the roots and stems will be frozen below 0℃. When potting, move indoors before frost. In areas north of the Yangtze River, after the leaves turn black due to frost, cut off the above-ground parts, dig up the rhizomes together with the soil, or take out the rhizomes and dry them in the sun for 2 days. When the rhizomes are dry, bury them in semi-dry sand and place them indoors at 5 to 7 degrees Celsius. Store in a dark place for overwintering. Divide the rhizomes in spring, leave 2 to 3 buds in each cluster, and plant them in flower pots or sunny open fields. Leaves will appear in about 30 days. The rhizomes do not need to be dormant. The indoor temperature is 20-25°C, and the ramets are propagated by germination.

(4) Shaping and pruning

Put off the remaining flowers promptly after flowering. To promote the germination of new branches, cut off the stems and leaves before entering the house in winter. Potted plants should be replanted once a year to remove old roots.

(5) Propagation

Propagation by division is the main method. Usually from March to April. Dig out the old rhizomes and divide them into pieces. Keep 2 to 3 buds and roots on each rhizome. Plant them into the soil 10 cm deep, keep the distance between plants 40 to 50 cm, and water enough. When cultivating new varieties or propagating in large quantities, seeding can be used for propagation.
