Why did all the nearly 70,000 kilograms of tilapia in Guangxi die overnight?

On the evening of March 29, five farmers in Liujiang District, Liuzhou, Guangxi discovered that nearly 35,000 kilograms of tilapia that were originally scheduled to be released to the market around the Qingming Festival died suddenly overnight. The loss is estimated amounting to more than 500,000 yuan. The farmers suspected that someone had put pesticides upstream, causing the fish to be poisoned and died. At present, relevant departments have intervened in the investigation.

The fish pond involved is located in Lazhaitun, Bailu Village, Chengtuan Town, downstream of a small river. There are still nearly 20,000 to 30,000 kilograms of dead fish that have not been cleaned up in the fish pond. Among them, nearly 15,000 kilograms of tilapia died in the fish pond of farmer Qin Chaotong, making him the farmer who suffered the most losses in the incident. He said, "Nothing happened to the fish in the fish ponds upstream. The fish that had the problem were all fish from five fish farmers downstream starting from our fish pond. And there are no pollution sources such as factories nearby."

In the fish pond of another fish farmer, Qin Youquan, there were too many dead fish. Dead fish were densely floating on the three to four hundred square meter fish pond. He said that all 12,000 kilograms of tilapia in his fish pond died. According to the current wholesale price of 15 to 16 yuan per kilogram, he lost nearly 200,000 yuan. Qin Youquan said that the village has always made a living by raising fish. The water for fish farming comes from the mountains and flows through the fish ponds in the village. The villagers suspected that the dead fish was caused by someone poisoning the water.

The Liujiang District Environmental Protection Department responded that there was no factory near the incident site and that the cause of the dead fish had been ruled out as being caused by pollution. Relevant departments have sent fish samples for testing and are still waiting for test results.

In order to investigate the cause of the dead fish and prevent dead fish from flowing into the market, after the incident, the Chengtuan Town Government of Liujiang District immediately established a working group to handle the follow-up work of the dead fish incident and prevent dead fish from flowing into the market. Endangering the health of citizens.
