pigpen

pigsty

hogpen, i.e., a house where pigs are kept, especially a building where a large number of pigs can be kept inside. A typical hogpen is protected from excessive heat and cold, well ventilated, and has clean bedding and feed. Simple hog barns are called pens or pens. Portable barns can be prefabricated or site-built, with or without a floor, and have a single wall with a burlap door that can be moved back to a cleaner location each season. Enclosure barns are mainly used to house groups of twelve or more sows and usually have concrete floors, smooth walls, and insulation. These barns can be air-conditioned or ventilated and insulated with heaters, underground hot water pipes, or heat lamps. Separate pens can be used to restrict the activities of farrowing sows to standing or lying down, but not allowed to walk around to avoid accidentally crushing the piglets.
