The body is laterally compressed, with a black spot behind the dorsal fin, a brownish-green body with iridescence, a reddish anterior belly, 8 to 9 transverse stripes on the side of the body, and a truncated caudal fin. The dorsal fin has 13 to 16 hard spines; the dorsal fin has 10 to 14 soft bars; the anal fin has 3 hard spines; the anal fin has 8 to 10 soft bars, and the length of the body is about 40 centimeters.
Originally found in Africa, the fish has been introduced to Europe and some Asian countries, where it has had an impact on local ecosystems. The fish is a primary freshwater fish, a widespread saline fish, highly adaptable to the environment, omnivorous, feeding on aquatic insects, organic debris, in order to build nests for spawning, the parent fish will protect the eggs until they hatch.
Strong adaptability to the environment, can tolerate pollution, low dissolved oxygen and turbid water; strong reproductive capacity, rapid growth, high resistance to disease, so widely introduced into the breeding. It is aggressive and territorial, causing damage to native fish species. Omnivorous, feeding on plankton, algae, aquatic plant debris, humus and small animals.
