Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (English: Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington; May 1, 1769-September 14, 1852), known as the Iron Duke, was the originator of successive Dukes of Wellington, and references to the usual "Duke of Wellington" usually refers to him.

At 7:00 p.m. on June 18, 1815, the climax of the Battle of the Conference arrived. The Prussians had massed their forces at Planois and were threatening Napoleon's line of retreat. The only reserve now in Napoleon's hands was the Old Near Guard.

He sent two of these battalions to drive out the Prussians at Planois, and left eight to Ney in a final struggle to break through Wellington's lines. But instead of widening the hole that had already been torn in La Haye Sainte, Ney led the Close Guards, organized in two dense columns, further to the left to attack the defenses held by the British Close Guards infantry.

Despite the heavy casualties suffered by the British infantry under French artillery fire, they still stood firm. They responded calmly, and when the enemy came within twenty yards, Wellington's crisp voice came from the hillside: "Close Guards, rise! Prepare for battle!"

Suddenly a shower of bullets burst out, giving the enemy a head-on blow, the French Home Guard was immediately routed, and fled. Napoleon's last bit of reserve in his hand was shot up, and it was his last bet.
