Add 90 or 120 milliliters of water for every 30 milliliters of Absinthe; you can also add ice cubes to a bottle of ice water, but make sure that you don't let the ice cubes fall into the drink; once the ice water is added, the Absinthe should gradually take on a suspending milk effect; the traditional method would be to use a fountain device to add the ice water to the Absinthe.
Czech or Modern Bohemian Drinking Method
Pour the Absinthe into a glass and place a sugar cube on an Absinthe spoon or teaspoon; dip the cube into the Absinthe, either with the spoon or by pouring a little of the liquor over the sugar. Light the vermouth-soaked sugar cube on fire for a minute to allow the sugar to begin to caramelize. (We don't recommend this method because the alcohol content is so high that it is likely to start a fire.) If still using the absinthe spoon. Be careful not to let the sugar burn or drip into the drink, thus ruining the flavor.
The "glass within a glass" method
Place a small glass filled with 30 milliliters of absinthe in an empty large glass; drop ice water into the small glass and allow the liquid in the small glass to overflow into the large glass. After 90-120 milliliters of water have been added, the large glass should be full of the liquor mixture, while the small glass will be full of just water; remove the small glass before serving from the large glass.
"Tempering" drinking
It's important to note that this method of drinking can be very dangerous "if done incorrectly". Because it requires you to set the vermouth on fire and then extinguish the flame with the palm of your hand over the tipple, it's literally playing with fire. "If you're not very clear on what others are pointing out, or if you're feeling no, then it's better not to try this drink." Also just so you're clear, this drink involves drinking a small glass of pure absinthe straight from the glass without diluting it. Because absinthe is strong, this method is not suitable for people who rarely drink it.
Pure Absinthe
Drink pure Absinthe straight. Vintage Absinthe is better drunk straight from the pure, and this method of drinking allows you to savor the unique flavor of a case of Absinthe; remember that this is not the customary way to drink it, as traditional Absinthe tends to have a high alcohol content. The hanging milk effect is a very important one in Absinthe. Therefore one should prepare good quality absinthe in order to experience this effect.
