Chinese Hakka Village Dwelling
Ten years of honing a masterpiece of art
Reading Xiong Qixiong's scroll "Chinese Hakka Village Dwelling"

Talking about the creation of contemporary Chinese landscape paintings, we can use the four words "mixed feelings" to summarize. The so-called "happy", should be recognized, contemporary Chinese landscape painting creation since the founding of new China for more than half a century since the unprecedented freedom of creation of a relaxed environment, the older generation of landscape painters youthful, the younger generation of landscape painters full of artistic vigor and vitality, and continue to produce a number of people left a good impression of the excellent works; the so-called "sad", the so-called "sad", the so-called "happy", should be recognized. The so-called "worry" is that the contemporary Chinese landscape painting industry, similar to the calligraphy industry "popular calligraphy" as "popular landscape painting". Such as the popular style of landscape painting to restore the ancient "Four Kings", cloning Huang Binhong's "popular Huang's landscape painting style". Some labeled "innovative" landscape painting works, said the ink and brush skills without ink and brush skills, the picture is dry without a sense of life, no artistic beauty, no cultural taste, appreciate those works is appetizing! Some landscape painters treat the tradition, not really learn, can not do what Mr. Li Keran advocated to maximize the fight into, of course, it is impossible to do to maximize the jump out. Some landscape painters change the "mastery of nature", for the mastery of predecessors and today's famous landscape painter's works, as a model for imitation and plagiarism. There is also, over the years, perhaps because of the Chinese painting "to the feet of the price" of it, whether it is birds and flowers, figures or landscape paintings, regardless of whether the subject matter is necessary, are painted more and more big, but, but big, big and empty nothing. In the contemporary Chinese art world is filled with the background of the wind of impatience, to read and evaluate the famous landscape painter Xiong Qixiong and his Chinese painting scroll "Chinese Hakka village map", I think it is very some practical significance.

A few days ago, Xiong Qixiong called from Meizhou, said he wanted to put since his retirement in 2002, before and after spending nearly a decade, traveling tens of thousands of miles, before and after several round trips to western Fujian Fujian, Jiangxi, Gannan, and Guangdong East Hakka mountain villages, the hardships of in-depth life in the making of in-depth investigation and research, investigation and sketching based on the study of ancient and modern scroll masterpieces of Chinese painting! On the basis of Yangtze River, Qingming Riverside, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains and Wuhan Flood Control, he started to draw the first sketch from the conception of the idea, and then made several drafts to create the Hakka Village Dwelling in China, which is more than 300 meters in length and 0.96 meters in height. I hope I can write a small article for him to publish the album. Xiong Qixiong and courier sent the relevant graphic materials. After enjoying Xiong Qixiong's "Chinese Hakka Village Dwellings", my spirit was invigorated. Hakka villages in real life is beautiful, Xiong Qixiong paintings of Hakka villages is more than real life and natural mountains and rivers into one, complement each other Hakka villages more beautiful, Xiong Qixiong heart to real life Hakka villages of natural beauty, sublimation of landscape paintings such as the ancients commented on, "can be viewed, can be traveled, can be lived in! "The whole scroll shows the beauty of the four seasons. The whole scroll presents the grandeur of Lingnan landscape with four seasons like spring, the mountains and fields are lush and green, and the air is moist with clouds and rain. Hakka mountain village picturesque idyllic scenery, natural and humanistic beauty, was Xiong Qixiong with its profound artistic skills, amazing perseverance and energy, after several years of work transformed into the beauty of the artistic image, solidified in the giant scroll of more than three hundred meters long.

The Hakka people are the Han people who, after many great migrations from the ancient "Central Plains" to avoid wars and disasters, gradually settled down in Gannan, western Fujian and eastern Guangdong, forming a Han people with a similar language, customs and humanistic history handed down from their ancestors. Most of the Hakka people settled in remote mountainous areas and relatively poor and backward areas. Therefore, there is a saying that "every mountain must have guests, no guests do not live in the mountains". Hakka people in the process of migration formed on the clan and ancestor veneration and worship; formed on the mountains and rivers of nature and worship; formed in nature to create a livable environment of a deliberate pursuit. When building Hakka houses, the Hakka people attach great importance to the selection and protection of the natural geographic environment, and most of them will choose a place with good feng shui to be the site of the house. Built by the Hakka ancestral hall, arch flying eaves, giant columns towering, solemn, around the ancient trees must be planted to shade the descendants; and to the east of Guangdong, it slowly formed a combination of ancestral houses and ancestral halls of the family name, the scale of the grand, the design and layout of the yin and yang, inside the square and outside the circle, there is a central axis and symmetry of the left and right of the "Dragon House". The children and grandchildren of the clan have been living in the house for hundreds of years! So the environment around the ancestral home to cherish the reverence for the ancient trees, rocks, springs intersection, the old wells and rivers are not cared for, are honored as "Bogong" God to worship in four seasons ------, so that generations have formed a number of beautiful environment suitable for living in the old village. These ancient dwellings, carrying the Hakka people from the Central Plains inherited from the ancient Han ancestors of the humanities code, from which came out of the history of modern civilization written by many famous revolutionaries, military, scientists, literati, artists, overseas Chinese industrialists and Hakka sages and so on.
From the point of view of the relationship between architecture and nature, Chinese Hakka dwellings, including earth enclosure, square building and the house of the dragon, is one of the five characteristic dwellings in China. Xiong Qixiong's "Picture of Chinese Hakka Village Dwellings" is a masterpiece of landscape scrolls that takes the dwellings and environment of the Hakka people living in the mountainous areas along the border of Fujian, Guangdong and Gan as the object of expression. In order to create this landscape scroll, Xiong Qixiong went back and forth to the mountainous areas of western Fujian, Gannan, and eastern Guangdong for many times to investigate and sketch, and collect materials for creation. Through in-depth investigation, he was surprised to find that these areas were exactly the Central Soviet Area where Chairman Mao Zedong and Commander-in-Chief Zhu De led the Red Army to fight in blood. From Gutian in western Fujian to Jinggangshan in Jiangxi, from Ruijin to Meixian, Xingning and Taipu, etc., the footprints of the Red Army were left everywhere. Many Hakka houses and ancestral temples have served as the residences of the Red Army's leadership and command organs! Also left Chairman Mao and other great people on the Hakka houses of admiration! Thus, these ancient Hakka dwellings, rich in historical and cultural value, have both the qualification of revolutionary cultural relics and ancient buildings with historical conservation value! And this also makes Xiong Qixiong added a sense of responsibility and creative power!

Xiong Qixiong for the creation of a good "Chinese Hakka village map", in the art is quite a lot of hard work. Industry connoisseurs know, Chinese landscape painting, especially the huge scroll landscape painting, in dealing with the artistic effect of the picture, will encounter a "real easy virtual difficult" problem, the place of the virtual, is not generally believed to be blanked out on the end of the matter. Xiong Qixiong in dealing with the scroll of the "blank articulation", bold techniques, chic techniques! Used the most and best "cloud spacing method" of dealing with technology, with "wet dyeing method boneless painting cloud", clever use of a thick and thin boneless method of shades of dark and light once over the paintings to go, until the pen contained in the color, moisture, all used up until the end, to achieve a one-stop dyeing cloud, the painting has a sense of thickness, but also a sense of thickness. The painted clouds have both a sense of thickness and a sense of lightness and drift, and their forms are ever-changing. Make more than three hundred meters long "Chinese Hakka Village Dwelling" picture, a transition paragraph has a specific modeling content. Second is the use of "scenery fading method" virtualization processing, is the clever use of the mountains and scenery between the smoke masking the area. These parts, must use the close-up real, dense to emphasize the space. Make the scene transition part of the picture changes in a natural and comfortable.
And then the second is the use of bushes and plants separation and articulation method, which is used in the creation of landscape painting scrolls in a "real and virtual" approach. In order to skillfully handle the landscape painting scroll composition, often with a group of combination of very beautiful staggered trees, balanced picture scene articulation, behind the scene to move. In order to make the "Chinese Hakka Village Dwelling" scroll in the composition of vivid and full of changes, Xiong Qixiong in the scroll composition, carefully designed each section of the picture scene of the artistic effect, in the specific drawing with the brilliant brush and ink, painted many not only rich in the sense of life, but also the form of the natural dynamic and very beautiful trees! People in the appreciation of Xiong Qixiong scroll picture of these trees, can see that they are painters from life, in the life of a large number of trees painted sketches, according to the composition needs to be processed. For example: in Meixian Baigong Lin Fengmian's former residence in that section, the author will be the former residence on both sides of the Baigong River of the old Chinese wolfberry grove, organized into the picture, through the combination of the form of the tree arranged to delineate, through a stream of grievances such as the atmosphere, so that the viewer in the see Lin Fengmian's former residence, linked up to add some associative factors (according to the local elders said that this tree can only grow here, move elsewhere on the planting of the not live!) This group of trees was sketched. This group of trees was painted in a sketching style! There is also the almost Hakka village symbol of bamboo bushes, citrus and pomelo forests, pine trees and large banyan trees, etc., were Xiong Qixiong consciously and skillfully organized into the picture, which not only reduces people's visual fatigue of the horizontal and vertical straight lines of the houses in the line of sight, but also increases the picture's flexible and vivid contrast changes.
In traditional landscape painting, trees are an extremely important part of the picture. Ancient landscape painters on the depiction of trees is a lot of effort, the ancient painters in nature to appreciate and marvel at the image of the trees they saw the magical beauty, on the "where the tens of thousands of books" on the sketching! With the growth of trees in the form of characteristics, to play to the fullest to play the skills of ink and brush. In Xiong Qixiong's landscape scrolls, it fully demonstrates his skillful brush and ink techniques and solid basic skills in painting trees! He paints trees with such ease. Out of Xiong Qixiong "Chinese Hakka Village Dwelling" scroll in those trees, different shapes, beautiful posture, full of vitality, full of interest, tracing back to the roots, you can see Xiong Qixiong from the 1960s in the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Department of Chinese Painting during the Landscape Division, due to the learning aspect of the deep "up to the Sung and Yuan's" Lingnan School of Painting, second generation The second generation of Lingnan School of Painting, Mr. Lai Xiongcai, taught the "Lai's tree method" of the Samadhi, Mr. Lai Xiongcai paintings of trees, especially "Lai's Pine", in the world of Chinese painting can be said to be far-flung, can be called ancient and modern one of the best! Xiong Qixiong paintings of trees, y the true tradition of Mr. Lai's predecessor, is "into a tree in the chest", without hesitation, put the brush to take straight! Passion for the paper, the spirit soars! Chinese Hakka Village Dwelling" scroll in the tree, is Xiong Qixiong out of the ink and brush, show the skills of the place. In addition, Xiong Qixiong in depth around the field study, but also pay close attention to the collection of houses around the image of forest material. Xiong Qixiong has a passion for trees!
Xiong Qixiong in the scroll picture composition, using the method of panning for the scene interval, so that he can easily put a few miles apart, dozens of miles, or even hundreds of miles away from the scene, a very natural and vivid combination of the scroll. Enhance the coherence of the content of the picture, so that the whole scroll of "Chinese Hakka Village Dwelling" can give a person the feeling of atmosphere, a breath of fresh air! In the picture processing, attaches great importance to the far look to take the potential, close look to take the quality, the actual place of fine work, the virtual place to do fine, so that there is an intriguing artistic effect. Let the viewer in front of each paragraph, are reluctant to stop and stay down to seriously appreciate and read the artistic effect of the picture.
In the expression, Xiong Qixiong adopts the technique of life drawing and realism, and seeks for technique and effect in realism! Adhere to the Chinese painting with brush and ink-based, give appropriate color to seek a unified effect. Strive to make the "Chinese Hakka Village Dwelling" picture can show a simple, true, natural, vivid, graceful, elegant artistic effect, both focusing on the traditional ink and brush writing lyricism, but also emphasize that this is a new modern landscape painting!
In terms of modeling, the artist strives to make the farm houses, jungles, mountain streams, and drifting clouds that appear in the picture, all of which are beautiful in their authenticity!

Famous young painters, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, director of scientific research, Professor Lin Lan, after seeing a section of the "Chinese Hakka Village Dwelling" original work, blurted out: "unparalleled! Some painters as old as Uncle Xiong, although there is this power, but not like Uncle Xiong has the energy to paint. And we young people have the energy but not the power to paint. Uncle Xiong, however, has done it all, it's really unrivaled!" When the creator's artistic ability and strength are well combined with the author's perseverance and energy, it is possible to condense a brilliant artistic marvel! What's more, in the history of Chinese painting, many classic heirloom works, many of which were created by painters in their old age. Traditional Chinese painters in the art of strength, knowledge and cultivation have accumulated to a certain extent, in order to achieve the so-called "pure fire" realm, in order to be more calm in the mind, in the creation of art, will be their own feelings of life, gathered to the end of the millimeter, freely presented on the screen!
