The end of heat is usually in autumn.
Introduction to Chushu:
Chishu is the fourteenth solar term of the twenty-four solar terms and the second solar term in autumn. Dou Zhi Wu (southwest); the sun's yellow longitude reaches 150°; the festival is held between August 22 and 24 of the Gregorian calendar every year. It's the end of the summer heat, and the "last heat" of the "three heats" of high-temperature and scorching weather has arrived, which means that the hot and unbearable weather has come to an end.
Farming activities:
The summer heat is over, and it is the busy season for harvesting mid-season rice in most parts of southern China. Generally speaking, during the summer season, South China still has plenty of sunshine. Except for the western part of South China, there are not many rainy days, which is conducive to mid-season rice harvesting and cotton cotton wadding. Fruits and crops in most parts of China are gradually entering the maturity stage, and farmers are stepping up picking, seizing the farming season, and conducting field management such as rice fertilization and weeding.
After the summer heat, the temperature difference between day and night increases. Because the nights are cold and the days are warm, the nutrients absorbed by crops during the day are stored at night, so the crops mature quickly. "The fields change continuously during the extreme heat," "there is no grain for three days during the extreme heat," "the rice is pregnant for three days during the extreme heat," "the fields are full of yellow during the extreme heat, and every family builds barns," etc., all indicate that after the extreme heat, crops will be harvested soon.
Traditional customs in the summer season:
1. Eating duck
"Half duck in July, half taro in August", the ancients believed that the middle of the seventh lunar month Duck is the most plump and nutritious. On the day of the end of the summer heat, old Beijingers will buy lily ducks during the end of the summer. In Jiangsu, people have to bring a bowl of duck dishes to their neighbors. As the saying goes, "the end of the summer heat brings ducks to every house."
2. Place river lanterns
River lanterns usually place lamps or candles on the base. Before and after the end of the summer heat, there are folk activities to celebrate the Ghost Festival, commonly known as "July Half" or "Hungry Ghost Festival". River lanterns are placed in the water and allowed to drift to commemorate the deceased and pray for safety.
3. Fishing Festival
After the end of summer, it is the time for fishery harvest. Coastal areas in China often hold various activities during this solar term to send fishermen off to sea and look forward to a good harvest. At this time, the water temperature in the sea area is still high, the fish schools will still stay around the sea area, and the fish, shrimp and shellfish are mature. Therefore, from this time onwards, people can often enjoy a wide variety of seafood.
