The legend of eating dumplings:
During the Eastern Han Dynasty, there was a Zhang Zhongjing in Nanyang who was a famous doctor. He was very skillful, no matter what kind of difficult illnesses, he could get rid of them, and people praised him as the saint of medicine with wonderful hands.
Zhang Zhongjing was an official in Changsha, and when he returned to his hometown, it was winter, with a cold wind and snowflakes. He walked to the bank of the White River, and saw those poor folks who went hither and thither for a living, their faces were yellow and skinny, their clothes did not cover their bodies, and the ears of some of them were frozen and rotted, which was very hard for him.
As soon as Zhang Zhongjing arrived home, there were a lot of people coming to his door to seek medical treatment. Although he was very busy, he always remembered those poor folks with frozen ears. He told his disciples to build a shed on a vacant lot in Dongguan, Nanyang, and put a cauldron on it, and opened it on the day of the winter solstice to give medicine to the poor to cure frostbite. The medicine was called "Cold-removing Jiao Er Tang". The practice is to use mutton, chili peppers and some of the cold medicines in the pot to boil boil, and so on, after cooking, the mutton medicine out of the chopped, wrapped in dough into an ear-shaped "Jiao Er" down the pot. Then distributed to the people to ask for medicine, each person to give a big bowl of soup, two ears. People ate the ear, drank the cold soup, only to feel the body warm, two ears raw heat.
Again, when Zhang Zhongjing was an official in Changsha, he often treated the local people and was loved by them. After he retired to his hometown, the people of Changsha missed him, and every year they elected a few old men of high moral standing to visit him with the hearts of the townspeople. That year, Zhang Zhongjing was seriously ill, and the old men in Changsha said, "There is a good land in Changsha, I want him to be buried in Changsha at the end of his life". The people of Nanyang were not willing to do so. They quarreled over the matter. Zhang Zhongjing said, "I have eaten the water of Changsha, I will not forget the love of Changsha's parents; I was born in Nanyang, I will not forget the kindness of my hometown. When I die, you will carry my coffin toward Changsha and bury me wherever the rope breaks." When the people heard this, they stopped arguing.
On the winter solstice of that year, Zhang Zhongjing left this world. Many people came to Changsha to mourn his death and to transport his body to Changsha. In accordance with his will, the people of Nanyang and Changsha carried the coffin on the road, and when they came to the place where the "Cold-expelling Jiao Er Tang" was held, the rope suddenly broke. All the people were busy beating the grave, getting off the coffin and filling up the grave. The people were busy beating the grave, putting down the coffin and filling up the grave, and they kept flowing day and night, making Zhang Zhongjing's grave very big. A temple was built in front of Zhang Zhongjing's grave, which is now known as the Shrine of the Sage of Healing.
